I never stopped reading and loving books, but for some reason whenever someone releases a “how to enjoy reading again!” Or “how to start a reading habit” video, I’m like a moth to a flame.

When I was young, I was such an avid reader. But schooling killed it for me. For Highschool/undergrad/grad school I was forced to read every day. Whether I liked the material or not. This absolutely destroyed my drive to read. Now that I'm graduating in the spring, I'm so glad I found this video. I would love to get back into reading again once I can do it for myself and not for a grade.

Ive always been a avid reader but I go through spurts where I devour books, then for a few months randomly Ill read literally nothing. What always works for me to get back into my regular reading is I find something light and fun and easily readable and I always grab the audiobook, and eventually I get sucked back in from listening while at work or just doing things around the house. I found this to be so effective.

I went almost a decade not reading much because I was working 80 to 100 hours a week. Now that I left that world, I'm sinking back into reading. Lemme tell you, once you drift away from the reading habit, it's hard to train your mind to focus like that again.

The number 1 thing that got me back on track to reading was deleting apps like TikTok off my phone lol if i was feeling bored i picked up a book instead of scrolling. I've now read so many books this year and it is SO true what you say about slowing down and taking time to enjoy a story. I'd say it's even helped me consume media like videogames or even movies in a more relaxed way instead of this FOMO aspect to them!

I've gotten so into reading again. I love your recommendation about finding movies you love and find a book based on them- I've done that and find so many new loves for books from doing that! And I have this cool little amber reading light that works well when I wanna read in bed but not keep my fiance awake lol. The amber light is good for making you sleepy 😴

Something I reminded myself a lot of when I got back into reading was that it is okay if you only read a little bit in a sitting. One chapter, or half a chapter, a day is more than I was doing. You get through books surprisingly fast when you realize this!

I'm an avid gamer, but started reading in 2021 with Harry Potter (never read the books before). When I reached book 5 I switched to a Kindle and never looked back. That thing was an absolute game-changer for me! I went on reading 62 last year, with 55 already this year. I never thought of myself as being a reader … that definitely changed. Having a routine also helped, reading at the same time of day for 1-2 hours. It took me a while to find my preferred genres (mostly horror, crime, and thrillers) but other than that it's just part of my life now :D

The biggest thing that helped me get back into reading was having someone to talk about books with
Started out with couple of people from work, then my reading really took off after discovering your channel and joining your Discord
It is such a great place not only to discuss books, seek recommendations when trying to decide what to read next, but it is such a wonderful community

I’m one of those people who reads in fits and starts, I read way more consistently as a child; I had the time and mental ability to fixate on a story. These past two years I’ve been trying to consistently read again and let me tell you, one of the best feelings is finishing a great book in one day. The true D.E.A.R days of adulthood.

I finished up Mistborn book 1 last night and that book single handedly reignited my passion for reading. Been in such a long slump but I just can’t put ‘em down now.

Sometimes all it takes is the right book!

I got back in to reading by basically reading the books in Crash Course Litterature, where you'd read the book and then watch a little video by one of the Greenbrothers talking about the book.
I skipped a few books (such as the Odyssey, having read Fry's retellings fairly recently, ) and skimmed some I just didn't enjoy much for whatever reason.

What I enjoyed about this way was that it gave me a few different types of books, and books I'd probably never have read on my own.
It also gave incentive to finish the book to then watch the little video about it.

The drawback being that I got this "let's get through this" mentality to reading, which isn't superb.

But my overarching focus was to get in to the habit of reading.
"Habits make lives", as someone probably said, so spending a month carving the habit of reading and you'll be able to benefit from it for years.

I read in morning 6:30 to 9:30. I read three books at same time but one chapter from each book.. Love it..

Can second the movies suggestion. I got into David Mitchell because of how much I loved the Wachowski sisters' Cloud Atlas adaptation, and got new respect for Cormac McCarthy after the Coen bros.' No Country For Old Men adaptation.

i literally read a crap ton of books at age 11, like war and peace, to spiderman, big nate, sk’s it, etc. i was a weird kid, so i only had that. even if i didn’t understand war and peace, i liked just understanding new words and syntax structures. haha, then i vowed to not read for a full decade since i was too addicted to books. i was like way too addicted, reading 400-500 pages a day, to right at this point in time, barely getting past 5-10 pages a day, or 30 on a good day. i hate it, all cuz of phone and other addictions. thank you for this video. imma throw away my phone lol.

From an early age I have always hated to read. it was just so difficult for me, but I always loved to listen I was a valedictorian in my major because I was lucky to have a really good teacher.
I loved to listen! I will be lost when someone is teaching. But when I tried to read the same topic which I'm interested in...I just couldn't comprehend, I had to read at least 3-5 times to understand properly, and I came to a conclusion that it is just a waste of time to read because in that 1 hour I can learn so much by listening but I can only read one page in a hour it took that long.
I was so embarrassed why I couldn't read when it is just easy for others
I had a friend and she used to read a book with in 2-3 days, I was just flabbergasted.
Later I discovered I had dyslexic and it all made sense

I used to read a lot as a kid, then I just kinda fell out of it as I grew up. I still read occasionally but not as much. After I became an adult I mainly got into manga/anime. I’ve been watching your videos for quite a few years now and your passion had always made me want to get back into reading books again, if only I had the time.
Then one day it hit me, I can just… stop making excuses for not reading and start reading again anytime. So I did. And the time to do so naturally made itself available.
I’m a lot busier now than I was back then yet I’m still managing to find time here and there to read, even if my very limited time means it takes me forever to get through a single book now. 😂

I’ve been thinking of tracking down some of the books I liked reading when I was a kid to reread them again 20 years later and see how they held up over the years.
The Dragonkeeper series by Carole Wilkinson is one I want to go through. Looking it up I found out that it’s apparently getting an animated movie next year.

For Merphy I recommend Grandad’s Gifts by Paul Jennings. I feel like it’s a childrens book you’d really enjoy.
