I don't think some of you realize. Being a dentist is not easy when you first start out. Dentists ARE doctors! That's why they have a D.M.D. (Doctor of oral medicine) title. They do have to study. The do have to work hard, me specially if you want to become an Oral/Maxillofacial surgery!!! Stop thinking its so damn easy. It's not

Please don't just use one source to find out things like this. Type in on Google 'dentistry average wage in the US' you will get less biased results.

If you start with 90-100k/year...you can feel happy, seriously, most bachelor majors who finish usually get under 50k/year....
After 3-5 years, your salary as a dentist will raise alot.

I know that in the UK dentist average is 75GBP (about $130k). Orthodontist is about 85GBP which is about $150. But this is in the UK not the US

@WarrenAch i've been checking a few of these sites. they are way off on incomes. a lot of specialities make minimum 500 000 eg surgeons, radiologists, derm, ophto.

Dental school tuition in the US averages 250K-300K over 4 years, not counting the 7.8% fixed interest. Most dentists start at 90-100K/yr for thier first few years. If you take out taxes and loan repayment, you won't be taking home much. If you want to make more than that, you will probably need to own your own practice, and that will cost around 200-500K with 7% interest. You will probably never get rich practicing dentistry.

@longdog33 False, R.O.A.D. Specialties are not paying 500k for most...

The average is around 280, 000$ and the private setting for Derm/Ophto/Plastic Surgery is getting more and more competitive, therefore income for average Specialists in this area will decrease.

Oh, and most Physicians work MINIMUM 65 hours/week, boring if you ask me, income per hour is definitely higher in Dentistry/Law/MBA-Level Business and the stakes are a lot less demanding.

@tremanrolls679 The "free" healthcare systems does not benefit dentists in any way. There's less saturation here in Canada, so a General Dentist can end up making about 300k/year FASTER and EASIER than a U.S. Dentist.
The Medical Doctor salaries are comparable to U.S. salaries, except for Quebec.
The shortage is only for family physicians, same goes for U.S., there's enough surgeons here in Canada.

@Dentfly1 A lot of people say "Do what you like most, don't let other people bother you", until they can't pay their bills or afford to retire.

So, you have something against people who care about money and Prestige ? Go ahead, become a janitor, show me your commitment.
