Air Force pilot Ross Franquemont flew his U-2 Spy plane through these colorful lights. Used for aerial surveillance, the U-2 can reach cruising altitudes of over 70,000 feet. The creation of these amazing light formations begins with the sun. Electrically charged ions constantly leave the sun in the form of solar wind. While most of the solar wind is blocked from earth by our magnetosphere, some enter. Colliding with nitrogen from earth’s atmosphere, energy is released, causing a glowing halo. Most auroras form somewhere between 60 and 620 miles above earth’s surface.

The illumination from auroras can be 600 miles high and stretch for thousands of miles. What did you think about this magnificent spectacle?

One of the most beautiful natural phenomenon our planet has to offer. Simply gorgeous. Hope I will one day get a chance to see this in person. Thanks National Geographic for sharing.

Sorry but all those pop up messages really spoiled the video.
Why not buy a mic?

Gorgeous scenerery but don't let that distract you from the fact that this is a spy plane lol

So beautiful. But isn't that harmful radiation he just flew through?

What would be really amazing is to see the video without all the stupid text in the way. WTF, guys?

I think cruising altitudes of over 70000 ft (~13.26 miles) is way below 60 - 620 miles above earth surface where auroras form. So, not so much flying into it.

Curvature is visible.

Must be a GoPro fisheye lens or CGI because reasons. Refraction, dome, etc.

My grandfather flew in the 2 seater nasa version for science experiments. Cool stories and photos. Wished I had learned more before he passed.
