Exceeding the sound barrier would not cause the plane to "burn up", but to break apart due to the shock. So slightly too fast you break apart, too slow you stall and drop like a rock, then break the sound barrier and break apart.

Wrote a paper in college about his shoot down! Was given the HANGER QUENN, before his flight and shotdown at an altitude way less than normal operational heights, a bit fishy!!!

In 1984, during a NATO exercise, Flight lieutenant Mike Hale of the RAF intercepted a U-2 at a height which they had previously considered safe (thought to be 66, 000 feet (20, 000 m)). Records show that Hale also climbed to 88, 000 ft (27, 000 m) in his Lightning F. 3 XR749.

I spent almost 20 years working on the U-2 Senior Span program. The Birds with the big hump on the back are Senior Span/Senior Spur capable. Also known as Senior Whale. 😂
