The Coast Guard has the 2nd highest standards out of any military branch, second to the marines.

Well, it's not JUST the CG having these issues. When you have x-military types (retired and relad's) telling these youngsters how our govt, not the service, have eroded benefits that were once free (and promised). TRICARE is one for example. Once, it was free. Now, you have to pay a monthly FEE and it keeps going up. It's not much, but still, the air we breath is free too. And even if you figure how to navigate the medical coverage system, you find yourself paying for things that used to be covered, and it's approved by the govt (thanks Humana). So, then there's BRAC. Closing of military bases around the country made it harder for some retired folks (or medically retired) to seek care. Good luck getting to a VA facility). So, the issue of todays youth not joining it two fold. They don't have the drive and you got vets who have paid attention and have the receipts to steer these young people away from joining.

The problem with recruitment is that the Coast Guard life is extremely tough. Even Navy Seals pee their pants when they think about the Coast Guard.

I expect lives being saved will decrease as more and more woman come on board. Men do the job better, these are facts.
