How do I get a stove going again after running overnight?

But doesn't it produce a bit too much smoke if you leave it smouldering away for 5 or 10 mins?
I'm always a bit nervous about annoying the neighbours leaving it like that.
I'd sooner put a couple of fire lighters on as well and light them.
