by the time one usually smells that something is a cult, they are usually already isolated from their family, dependent on the cult, financially compromised - and people are very often vulnerable to start with, 'looking' for something, 'missing' something, 'needing' something.

My parents had friends (Sheila and Jim) who were a part of the Peoples Temple Jonestown mass suicide/murder in 1978 Guyana. It was a married couple who had two kids that also perished. My parents were huge hippies of the 1960s and became friends with the couple at a commune. My parents got pregnant with me and decided to pretty much leave the hippie life to become responsible parents. They still had their hippie ways and philosophies but ended up going back to college, getting their degrees, began their chosen careers and we settled into suburban life.

Sheila and Jim were actually my godparents until they joined up with that maniac Jim Jones and followed him to Guyana. My parents tried to contact them several times. The last letter they wrote to my parents they said that they were trying to leave Jonestown to come back to the States but that it was difficult securing funds. Two months later the mass suicide/murders happened.

My parents brought me up to question EVERYTHING and to never believe something just because someone says so. I think they had a huge fear of cults after what happened to Sheila and Jim. They were initially brainwashed and charmed by Jones. Once they finally realized what was really going on, it was too late. My parents know for sure that they had a daughter who would've been about 5-6 years old at the time and they think they ended up having a baby boy while in
Guyana. Obviously the children would've perished, also.

I think my parents experience is why they were so adamant about me not becoming brainwashed into a cult. It kinda backfired on them slightly because I've always been a bit defiant in questioning EVERYTHING. 😆I ended up raising my kids the same way, though.

Many of these people who succumb to cults have been ostracized by their family and they're looking for either a surrogate family or at least something to belong to. Unconditional love of your children and teaching them to think for themselves goes a LONG way in preventing them getting sucked into a cult.

I used to go to this house as a kid. I was always so scared of a particular room in that house and when I saw the dead bodies in that room on the news, my soul practically left my body 😱

As a 60 year old I am so grateful I never fell for all the cults that flourished. As a young girl I remember Jim Jones and the dead bodies shown on the news. I was to young for the Manson murders but I remember Waco and HeavensGate with their shrouds and Nike shoes. My step brother joined a cult and we never saw him again. He had a curiosity for religions but also had mental illness. My father always said only weak minds fall for cult leaders.

I’m just getting out of a 12 year relationship that had a lot of psychological and emotional abuse. My mom even said to me “you’ve been in a 2 person cult for 12 years”. I think, once you think about cult like that, it’s really easy to understand how someone could get trapped

I'm glad people have mentioned the Jim Jones fiasco in Guyana, where over 900 people lost their lives, including a US senator. To me, this was the worst example of cult-related death. Most of us sat glued to TVs and magazines, digesting every morsel.

But now that I am a lot older I realize we all are grasping for pure happiness that money, power and prestige can't give us. Been a listener for a year now and so happy you’re doing deep dives on cults. I’m so happy I came home to see you uploaded about Heaven’s Gate because I literally was about to watch someone else’s video about it but I saw my girl Annie covered it. I hit play so fast! I was in a cult during my pregnancy. I wasn’t aware that it was a cult at the time and of course it’s not advertised as a cult. It was a “home for pregnant and unwed mothers” and it was a Christian cult. I will say that I however, met some really nice people at the church we had to go to and when I was kicked out with my newborn the preacher at the church actually worked with me to help bring awareness to this house/cult. The church also stopped endorsing them because they were so disgusted. About 30 of us who went through abuse there were able to share our story and we are working with the attorney general to get it seized. Since it’s a religious shelter (cult) it’s difficult but I will not stop trying to save other mamas from going through that trauma.

It’s mind boggling how so many people are manipulated by cults I can’t even wrap my mind around it.
