ADHD, Dyslexia Advice for Kids: Try Smarter, Not Try Harder

“Can you try a little harder to just focus here?” Kids with learning and thinking differences hear that bit of advice often. But many kids with dyslexia, ADHD, and other learning and thinking differences are already trying their hardest. The better advice is to “try smarter.”

It has taken me years to training myself to learn. To learn how to learn. I still struggle sometimes. Read a whole page of text flawlessly but have no idea what i just read because i was thinking about something else while i was reading. For me the key was to make everything a big road map. If i know what the puzzle looks like i can put it together time and time again. It also helps to be hype when I'm studying. Ive learned to use my bouncing mind to my advantage. Maybe i need to memorize reagents for an organic chemistry test. So and i think a word sounds funny, and make a joke to myself. Well now I'm not going to forget because i remember the joke. Little things like that carrying me though college. And hopefully med school. Its a challenge, not impossible.
