The Chilling Debate: Coolant vs Antifreeze

Many people including myself have used the words "Antifreeze" and "Coolant" interchangeably, but there actually is a difference! Both of them typically contain ethylene glycol, but the core of the antifreeze vs coolant difference is if it is "premix" (ready to be used), or needs some water added to the concentrate.

Fortunately, most automotive parts/sales people will understand if you say "I need 50/50 mix antifreeze for my radiator" or "I need some full strength coolant for the engine in such and such car", so this difference is more of a fun fact for most people. I know I'll certainly make the mistake again myself!

Anti-freeze is also something you pour down your toilets and pipes in the winter, so the water doesn’t freeze in the pipes, expanding and breaking the pipes and causing a blockage. Bit of trivia for yous there.

Coolant by itself is just water. Anti freeze by itself is just an anti freezing agent. They work together to provide a wide range of temp. The key here tho is the radiator cap.
