kids just have motivation and time to play and older people have real life

it's true about mentality, honestly most players just end up losing interest before they get into their mid 20s. personally as someone who is currently dying of old age (24) i feel like i only improved over time, and every time i felt like my skill was decaying was purely because i hadn't played the game as frequently as i did in the past. if i start playing again now i'm going to suck much more than i did when i was 17, but after like 6 days of consecutively playing i'm 100% going to be setting scores i couldn't do before

Karthy's case is a real eye-opener even moreso because speed is something people often attribute to age.

I started playing right around when I turned 20 and got good enough to compete in OWC back then. I stopped playing when my first kid was on the way in 2014, and started playing again in 2018 after he got a little bit older. Stopped playing again for a few years due to kid #2, and started playing again in 2021. I'm better now at 31 years old than I was when I was in my early 20s and my skillset has expanded. My best plays are from very recent. I don't play competitive at all anymore, but I still give myself small personal challenges, a map or two at a time. Responsibilities play a huge roll in how much you play and how you approach a game like this. I still love Osu, but my life and life in general is much bigger than this now for me personally. I'd have to agree that for Osu, and most likely every other competitive video game, that circumstance of life does play a gigantic role in the "age" question. Cool video!

Players like bubbleman or even cookiezi are good examples of how age can be negligible as long as you play consistently. That's not to say that being young doesn't have an advantage when it comes to learning fast.

I'm 26, almost 27, ranking 33k~. I'd say age doesn't matter that much, I work a full-time job, after I come back home I spend a bit of my time at osu to relax myself and it's really fun. As long as you do something regularly, you'll get better. I don't care too much about improvement anymore, as I've been around the game since 2012, just want to have a good time, listen to good music, set some cool scores. I am of course getting better at the game, in the same rate I did when I was 16, but it's not something important to me anymore. It was, when I was younger though. It's the first difference I've noticed through the years that I don't care that much anymore, I don't feel nerves at all even when I'm into 2000 combo having an SS. It's just "yeah, cool" now.

Perhaps I'll achieve something in the game in the long run, who knows. I think the biggest advantage you have when you are in your late 20's is your mental stability, how you approach things like failures and overall maturity that helps you approach the game in a different perspective compared to when you were 16.

I also live on my own, so I don't have to worry too much about "parents" or stuff, that may somehow hurt your "osu career", if I can call it that way. As long as you have fun doing something, you are never too old or too young to do that. When I'll be 30, 40, if osu is still around and I'll feel fun - I'll keep playing.

I'm still waiting for Lazer though...

It's pretty nice to hear Karthy started osu in his early 20s. It felt weird since I started around the same age but now it's more motivating knowing that a top player started in their 20s too

I agree with pretty much everything in this video tbh. Life priorities are much more a factor than actual aging. I personally don't have a huge social life, I'll go out for food and drinks with friends occasionally but I mostly just work full time and play video games. I got really into osu just barely under a year ago after not touching it for a few years and went from rank 1.1m to 36k in just under a year. (I was at about 700 play count when I got "back" into it, and am now at 27, 352 play count.) I'm 25 years old, and always trying to be improving at the game.

aparently bikko was 30 when he popped off in 2015 (edit: he was born 86 so he was actually 29 but same thing)

I started playing osu in 2013 when I was 19 years old. Now I am 28, and still play. My peak in pure rank was 2015-2016, and since then I didn't really improve anymore, or just a little bit. However, I'll be honest that I had some major breaks in between, and most of the time - even though I of course played to improve generally - didn't bother to practice maps for pure improvement, but rather played maps I enjoyed (not going out of my comfort zone a lot).
I feel like I could still improve, though, if I really put in the effort into it, I am just too lazy to do so lmao.

Started playing osu! At 24. Now I'm 26. Still just under 200k rank, but I'd say I'm doing well for myself despite my obnoxious work schedule. Regardless of how well you perform compared to others, the important thing is that I still feel the sense of my own improvement. I am expecting my first 200 pp play sometime soon, and I can't wait for it.

Blaming age is akin to blaming genetics for poor osu performance.
