Windows 10 'Invalid Value for Registry' error - Fix

How to fix 'invalid value for registry' error while opening photos, pdf, mp3, mp4, music, video etc. in Windows 10.

Go to Start, then Settings, System, Apps & Features and click on "Photos" app. Under Advanced options you'll find the reset button

I actually was experiencing this error with my videos. However i did the exact same thing with my movies and tv app, and worked beautifully thanx simple and easy.

now you can go in: settings--->apps--->apps and features--->search for "microsoft photos"---> andvanced settings--->go down and do "repair" first instead of reset, it also worked for me with repair, but still, thanks for helping me out

Just a little note for the latest version of Windows 10: Apps have now got a separate category named "Apps", in which you can find the "Apps & Features" page.
Additionally, Microsoft has now made a "repair" option for the photos app, so use that in order to not lose any data. :)

3 years after this was posted and I it really helped me today! Was transferring some photos form my old phone to a flash drive and after it was transferred it would not open. Followed your instructions and it’s fixed now thank you so much!!

After an external hard drive failure, I restored my files and then found that I could not access my images through the default Windows 10 Pro (Microsoft) 'Photos' app without getting this 'Invalid Value for Registry' error. I just followed the instructions above and tried 'Repair' first, before 'Reset', and in my case Repair has worked. Any more issues I will know what to do. Thanks Niyas C, much appreciated.

oMgosh! this actually worked for me! thanks! For me to find it, the clicking on "system" didn't work, I had to type in "apps" in the start up search bar before I found the app center but yeah! thanks!!
