Alberta storms: Calgary airport terminal damaged as hail, heavy rains hit city

Calgarians are assessing the damage on Tuesday after an intense thunderstorm rolled through the city on Monday evening, bringing hail, winds and heavy rains.

Several homes were damaged by large golf-ball-sized hail, with an emergency alert telling people to take cover.

Meanwhile, flooding and damage at Calgary's International Airport (YYC) led to flight cancellations and stranded passengers.

In the southeast, no hail but tons of lightning and rain. So thankful !! Calgary is 820 sq km.

heavy rain/hail even at severe level are not new anywhere in Canada, Calgary even bidded and hosted Winter Olympics sometime ago, so it knows how it's like during winter. so why is the City so ill prepared for severe weather. there should be at least annual review on core infrastructures (such as airport) if not quarterly, Calgarians suffers because there's lack of leadership, the decision makers are just there for the pay cheques, there's no morale, ethics or accountabilities.

Never buy a brand new car if you live in Calgary. Hail is a normal occurrence in Calgary and so your car will just get damaged and devalued quickly because of it.

As for houses, make sure to get Stucco siding for more durability.

Luckily YYC already has the highest airport improvement fees in the entire country. Now they can use that money for repairs rather than useless additions.

All the cars that parked under the overpass should be charged and have to pay for the damages on the cars that couldn’t get through the underpass

We were in Calgary when that happened back in August 2024. Could not believe all the cars lined up underneath the overpass. They really caused a big traffic jam! Thankfully, we were north of Calgary when the storm came through. We just saw the aftermath.

My new car was damaged by hail on a visit to Calgary in 1981, not new. Windshield was OK but body very damaged.

My family and I were suspicious of how strong and loud the wind was and though there was most likely a funnel cloud forming but who knows.
