I bought my house in the south for a reason. Fewer hail storms. And less severe.

Never buy a brand new car if you live in Calgary. Hail is a normal occurrence in Calgary and so your car will just get damaged and devalued quickly because of it.

As for houses, make sure to get Stucco siding for more durability.

I live in Evanston, probably $40-$60k damage and my home insurance doesn't have hail coverage. That's my fault, I should paid closer attention to my policy inclusions/exclusions; I signed up for the cheapest home insurance I could find when I was unemployed during Covid and that policy just kept auto-renewing as is. Never thought I was undeer covered till now. Thoughts of unaliving myself grow by the hour :(

Learn to research weather data. 1991, 2010, and 2016 all had serious hailstorms. This is nothing new in Hailstorm Alley. The cost of hail damage repair goes up because the costs of labour and materials have steadily increased. Insurance companies cheerfully gouge their customers whenever they get the chance. Neither the province nor the municipalities have changed the building codes to mandate hail-resistant roofing, siding, and windows. Vinyl siding is now thinner and more brittle than it was years ago. Builders just build cheap, because that’s what buyers demand. They won’t pay thousands extra for Hardie board, metal roofs, or upgraded shingles. The results are inevitable.
