Outnumbered 12:1, surrounded, and still pulled off a 3.6 KD. That’s some solid defense.

You cannot underestimate the gravity of this event. The end of a empire, of 1, 500 years of age, finally comes to a close. It is a unfortunate reality, that, coming to this, they weren’t recognized as rome, yet replaced by obscure emperor from Germany. The breath of the last soldier would be the last recorded breath of the Roman Empire. It’s still crazy how, constantinople was attacked two times during the Macedonian Dynasty. It's a sad reality that, out of all the emperors of the history of the Western Roman Empire, only a few of them were great, and one of the few greats, had the worst event in history. He did everything to save the empire, from aligning himself with the Catholic Church which the civilians did not like, to even giving gifts to the Ottomans. If Constantine the XI was in a better era, say after Justinian the Great had died, Byzantium would have lasted longer. Even against all odds, in Constantinople, he never surrendered. None of his men did. Even when given the opportunity to retreat, he stayed with his empire. With the last of his men, he charged into battle, never to be seen again. This being overshadowed by amateur historians is sad, it is a event that needs to be learned for all ages. The thing is, the Eastern Roman Empire survived longer than the Ottomans.

*"If my city falls, I fall with it."*

*-Constantine the XI*

War is not about who is right, it's about who is left.

Well, because of this, America exists. Otherwise, there is no reason for Europeans to seek and sponsor exploration of other alternative routes to Asia. Human history has a lot of funny turns.

130k are you kidding? 130k in 1453. Historians say it is 50k-80k. They say that at that time, 130k people could not stay together for a long time due to the disease. If you are referring to wikipedia, 100k-130k is not based on a strong source.

The river here with the 3 bridges crossing it is the Golden Horn. The Romans had a massive chain across the mouth of it, and ships defending it loaded with "Greek Fire", a highly flammable liquid who's secret ingredients are lost to time (but it was probably something like gasoline or napalm). This is a major inspiration for the siege of Kings Landing in Game of Thrones, but sadly in the real thing, the Lannisters and Tyrells did not show up the save the day.

The Ottomans ended up breaking into the Golden Horn only by dragging their fleet over land to get around the chain.

I remember reading from different sources that the ottomans had 15.000 casualties on a single day.Don’t you know that the ottoman force on the last day was on its bones? If the last attack failed Mehmed would probably call of the siege

Kudos to the Genoese (Italians) who actually showed up in the form of Guistiniani. 🙌

0:18 turks move SHIPS over the hills of galata and enter the golden horn (there were chains on water to block any ships enter the golden horn). the eastern roman soldiers leaving the walls and going there is a consequence for that.

mehmet II truly was a genius.

I'm still surprised how the Bryantines existed for around 12 centuries... They went to basically having Eastern Europe, into only owning parts of Turkey, Constantinople, Southern Greece, and other parts.
