I always feel disheartened in the lack of knowledge in my fellow citizens, even family and friends, when I have to explain the difference between Veterans Day and Memorial Day. I wince to myself when people tell me "Happy Memorial Day!" I try not to show my displeasure with them as they are ignorant of the meaning. Sometimes I'll correct them, sometimes I won't. But I always take a moment to remember my only friend in the Marine Corps that I knew who lost his life in Desert Storm. I also think of all the veterans who went before me.
Please take a moment whenever you hear someone get the days confused and gently remind them that Memorial Day is for those who have passed on and Veterans Day is for us who served and are still alive.
