The Golden Rule was meant to remind us about common courtesy, respect and kindness, in any situation and towards anyone. I don't believe it is meant as the sole tool for managing people and personalities in the workplace.

Um, you’re not arguing against the golden rule. You’re actually arguing for it. But thanks for the lost 20 minutes.

And...air quotes are such a crutch. Just offering feedback.

We regard old terms to be boring. I get it. You know marketing these days. Golden rule: "Do to others what others would do you you." Translation: I can only do good to you if you regard what I do as good, otherwise I'm not doing good to you. If I do good to you (which you regard as good), I can reasonably expect some degree of good from you at some point. If I don't regard something you view as good, then I won't do it because I will stand with what I believe. Platinum rule: "Treat others the way they want to be treated." You like ice cream? I give you ice cream to be close to you. (I can't say ice cream is bad for you because it's the platinum rule 'treat them the way they want to be treated.') Would you commit murder or euthanasia for someone if that is their view of good treatment? We can't be customer service every minute. Quite a spoiler for kids, actually.

You make a great point here. If we treat people according to our own values, then we can never get around people's differences. However, this is not as much a corollary to the Golden Rule as an extension. Our biggest value is being treated according to our values. The Golden Rule would say that, since we would like to be treated with empathy, we must also empathize with others, which is exactly what you are saying. It's definitely a win-win

love the golden rule. All cultures have a version, most also have forced treatment in psychiatry so most cultures ignore it.

What you said by all respect is wrong, do you think someone who does treat you the way he won't like to be treated is someone who empathize with you, even if you have no problem with that treatment it isn't compassion, you could say that i'm completely wrong, because you have to know that real goodness is self-goodness, i won't do something that hurts me, but do you think if it's not the case for you i should do it if you want to, and creating empathy in the process!!!!
