On August 13, 2015, a routine day out at the Cedar Point Amusement park for special education teacher James Young ended in tragedy after a spur of the moment decision resulted in deadly consequences. After riding the Raptor Roller Coaster, one of Cedar Points star attractions, he realised that his phone had dropped out of his pocket. Rather then wait until the end of the day James made a fatal decision that would change his families life forever.

Once again, a phone is not worth risking your life for. It can be replaced- you can't be.

Cedar Point is in no obligation to change anything. If you scale two fences and ignore signs the consequences are on you. I sympathize with his family but their frustrations are misguided

All due respect to his family .... he clearly wasnt sensible and to say its because the fence too low is ridiculous

This man endangered the lives of those on the roller coaster.

Hard to empathize when a grown man ignores signage and multiple fences

This one wasn't really a disaster. It was someone making a very very bad decision. Heartbreaking for his family. 😢

If I’ve learned anything from years of customer service, it is – people will NOT read signs, no matter how many there are, or what they say! And even if they do read them, they will defy them!

I feel the same way about fools who break into a dangerous animal's enclosure. Those enclosures are meant to keep the animal in, not necessarily a human out. The fact that there were two fences and plenty of signs should have been warning enough for him to let the staff handle it and not resort to self help. Ultimately, it was only a phone.

James was told to wait til the end of the day but he ignored the park, warnings on the fences and took the risk which unfortunately ended up taking his life. Phones can be replaced, loved ones cannot. RIP James 😢

i hate when people blame the fences for being too easy to climb. ridiculous
the fences are to stop wandering kids from climbing it.
there are already TWO FENCES. stupid people are stupid people and will climb anyway

I went to Cedar point once, but I remember that my glasses had broken and I didn't have contacts so I was walking around nearly blind. Most hilarious part? Know those ring toss games where you try and toss a ring onto a bottle? I fucking nailed it while unable to see what I was throwing at, got like a 4 foot tall stuffed animal for that

I feel bad for the people on the coaster and every person who had to get involved in his fatal stupidity. His family wasn't the only group directly affected by his actions and (having seen the fences myself) Cedar Point was blameless.

I cannot believe that a 45 year old teacher was stupid enough to ignore warning sings, leap two fences get himself killed and terrify a carriage full of people who had to be suspended in the air while his irresponsible corpse was hauled out of there. But even more unbelievable than that is his family trying to shovel blame in the direction of the park and its employees.

I was a teacher and being in that position makes you hypervigilant about situations like this. I'm always having people say to me "I feel like I'm a school trip. You're always checking the rules!"

Yes. It's ingrained into most teachers to do so because we're often responsible for large groups of feckless kids. We are meant to be the sensible ones.

I'd agree that the fencing needs to be replaced IF it was only a couple of feet tall and easy to traverse. Ignoring warning signs and climbing over fences into a clearly marked danger zone was a tragically stupid thing to do.

How tf is the park to blame bc some dumbass climbed a fence?
“Maybe ppl don’t realize how dangerous it is under a rollercoaster” DAFUQ???? I’m glad the park told them to feck off. Whole thing was dudes own fault then his family wants to get paid and blame others
I think I remember the guy had consumed alcohol too

the thing that surprises me most about all these "retrieve my phone/hat" deaths is... how the hell are you not able to time the rollercoaster? do they just run for it without getting the timing of the coaster?

It amazes me every time I see a “smart” person climb multiple fences to retrieve an item! I don’t care how high they make the fences. There will always be someone who climbs them and dies!

Its always hard to wrap my brain around how people even entertain the idea of going over the fences.. having the same accident happen this year at Kings Island (Banshee) really shocked everyone. When a guest reports to us that they lost something, we are always quick to retrieve said item at the end of the night. And depending on the item, such as medical needs (i.e inhaler, etc) we are able to take the ride down to retrieve. A phone, hat, whatever, is NOT worth your LIFE. The danger zones are just that.. DANGER zones. Please please please, just alert an associate.. and try to be patient.

7:11 is a master class in subtle comedy, brilliant editing. It's always hard to feel any sympathy for people who die/get severely injured while blatantly ignoring safety guidelines. A 4 foot fence is plenty high enough to stop a sane person, let alone a second 6 foot one, underneath a machine going freeway speeds. His family are supremely shity for trying to sue the park, grief is one hell of an emotion.
