House makes a bet with Cuddy that he can't last a week withoout any Vicodin. House is determined to prove her wrong, but will he be able to do his job properly?

While trying to figure out why a young patient (Nicholas D'Agosto) will not stop bleeding after a car wreck, House accepts Cuddy's challenge and goes off Vicodin for a week in exchange for no clinic duty for a month. As House's withdrawal symptoms become severe, his methodology for his patient is more harsh and risky, and Foreman and Cameron are afraid he may not be thinking clearly enough in order to save the patient's life. House does solve the case though by exhuming the family's recently deceased cat and performing an autopsy on it. He finds high doses of napthalene, which is excreted by termites as a repellent. The patient has been exposed to the poisonous vapors due to a termite nest behind the walls of his bedroom.

i once went to a doctor for back pain, and they asked why i had second degree burns on my back which was news to me, i had just had a hot water bottle on my back to relieve the pain which was so great i didnt even realise i was being burned, anyone who questions the need for pain meds has never been in real pain

For those of you who don't get what he's doing at 7:00, basically the body prioritizes pain receptors (aka indications of injury) according to the severity. So by creating a more severe injury by breaking his hand, he's causing his body to dull the pain receptors in his leg and focus on the more serious injury in his hand, relieving some of the pain overall.

I used to have little sympathy for addicts. Then I went on medication. Then I went off medication, cold turkey. It certainly changed my perspective. Withdrawal is something you should be fortunate enough to go your whole life without experiencing.

I have nerve damage in my right leg, a bit like House, I use a stick too and use opioids as well. Whoever made this character really knew his stuff. I relate very much to what House often feels. Very well written. Someone who never experienced chronic pain for a (very) long time, just won't understand and never will until they find themselves in these shoes.

What really scared me about this is how red and glassy his eyes look along with the smile and sigh of relief through the pain. The combination of Vicodin withdrawal and the pain in his leg is so bad that he was willing to break his hand and feel entirely _new_ pain just so his leg wouldn't hurt as much....and that smile....I can only imagine how bad that combination must be for him to feel that the pain of breaking his hand was worth temporary relief from the pain in his leg.

1:25 Has always bugged me about what Cuddy says here. He’s been on Vicodin for years, there’s a difference between addiction and dependence; he’d go through withdrawal either way. Someone who’s dependent on narcotics could taper off slowly so they don’t feel the withdrawal and all that would be left is the pain. An addict would taper off but still have the pain *and* the craving for the drug

I can totally understand him breaking his own finger to relieve pain from his leg. I have arthritis in all my joints but particuarly in my feet and back (I'm 23). Before I went on medications, I used to bite my hand because I'd rather feel that sharp pain then the constant dull ache in my joints.

For anyone who has not experienced severe chronic pain and is confused by the end.
It is not uncommon for acute pain to be a relief to the constant chronic pain. The thing about pain is that it demands to be felt. Its exhausting. Horribly exhausting.
