I think it's a very cool but sad detail. What makes it even better is that earlier, when Simba is trying to wake up Mufasa, he is excited to leave the home and venture out into the Pridelands, nagging his father to wake up and do so.

Later, when Mufasa dies and Simba tries to wake Mufasa up again, he says "It's time to go home.".

I noticed that even as a child when I first watched the movie. Which is what made the scene even sadder and more heartwrenching. One of the top movies to make me feel like I was gonna cry my eyes out.

What makes this even 1 billion times sadder and more tragic. Is this Simba can’t wake his father up. So he decides to sleep with him forever. Under his paw. Bro the lion king will send you through the feels. It is a beautifully tragic story with Powerful life lessons.
