► From the EU referendum to record numbers of people risking their lives to cross the Channel in small boats, migration is a story that never goes away.

But how many people are coming to Britain these days? Where are they coming from? And does government intervention ever make a difference?

Andy Bell talks to the Migration Observatory Director Madeleine Sumption about the UK’s current migrant situation, what the end of the EU free movement meant for it, and how the pandemic has made things all the more complicated.

Net immigration from EU countries has stopped, with effectively no change apparent in the two years to the end of June 2021, net immigration from non-EU countries has remained high, with 250, 000 in the latest year - Financial Times. Was Brexit against the EU-migration? This is how it looks like to me. The UK is not competitive for the EU workers comparing to Scandinavia, Germany, Austria, Spain, Italy, Switzerland etc. British Economy has the lowest growth out of G7 and one of the lowest among G20. North Ireland is a part of the country which does the best economicall, excluding the City of London because it’s still within the EU. Britain cut itself from the EU and the EU workers cut themselves from Britain and moved elsewhere. I hope that people from South-East Asia will be able to fill this gap and help British economy. It’s good that they will have more opportunities.

Well this presenter obviously does not live in an area that has been changed over time by freedom of movement/ mass immagration! We got here because of New Labour who never gave the British public any public vote or any form of consultation on opening up our borders etc The UK never had these problems before 1997 as immagration was controled? Also if you have paid tax all your life towards the nhs and schools etc and your parents before hand and so on, why is it that people who have never paid into the system or only have access to the above? Who ever comes here to live should have health insurance and also proof that they have a job or can financialy support themselves or their family?
