Currently, master’s students can bring their children and partners to the UK with them on a graduate visa. They are allowed to stay for 24 months after the student’s education ends.

The updated rule will not affect Ph.D. students whose training has a duration of three to five years and will produce highly skilled workers.

Net migration is expected to be somewhere around one million when official statistics are published on 25 May.
