"SpaceX founder Elon Musk has outlined his highly ambitious vision for manned missions to Mars, which he said could begin as soon as 2022 – three years sooner than his previous estimates.

However, the question of how such extravagantly expensive missions would be funded remains largely in the dark.

“What I really want to try to achieve here is to make Mars seem possible – like it’s something we can achieve in our lifetimes,” Musk told an audience in his keynote speech at the International Astronautical Congress in Guadalajara, Mexico, on Tuesday.

He said there were “two fundamental paths” facing humanity today. “One is that we stay on Earth forever and then there will be an inevitable extinction event,” he said. “The alternative is to become a spacefaring civilization, and a multi-planetary species.”

Go to mars? I'd much rather fight my neighbors over religion, race, politics, and money.

Lets lie to conservatives about the current situation on mars and send them there.

We should take care of what we have here on Earth.. .

This video is inaccurate. Elon is providing the TRANSIT aspect of colonization, he is not attempting the colonization process, it's pretty dramatic when considering the two.

It's really amazing that soon, when people say, "I don't want to live on this planet anymore, " they can literally follow through with it. Sign me up.

It's crazy to think that I could be alive for something like this. I would have never thought

Ending the segment with the traditional explosion was, perhaps, ill advised.

It would be easier and a hell of a lot cheaper to colonize deserts on earth in a sustainable manner.

Oh boy we're going to colonize Mars with Walmart's, McDonalds, Star Bucks, Taco Bell's, Disney Land theme parks, and sex shops

"The innovations he mentioned haven't been developed yet". Lol. Then they aren't innovations yet are they?

I'd also like to see us maintain a proper deep space station that doesn't orbit anything and tries to be self sufficient by mining nearby resources, grows their own food, etc. If we can survive a long period without needing to visit any planet at all, we truly can survive the universe. When our species grows to a point we can't breed anymore, start cloning.

He never said it cost 10B for one person. He said the whole project would be 10B.

We need to spend more money on science in our schools and research Labs. We need to focus on moving forward with researching new technology exploring new ideas. Endeavors like things like this could bring incredible breakthroughs. That would benefit mankind and Earth.

I would like to point out that it was not 10 billion was for the full development of the rocket he wishes to create. His hope is that it would cost per person to go to mars once everything is said and done.

We haven't been back to the moon since December 1972, why? Its too risky! So a 3 day trip is too hard but a 3 year trip even if new thrusters make it months still crazy dangerous. Best to wait instead of getting stranded part way into trip. Get the science and tech level to do it safety first

Exploring Mars is one thing; but I don't see how we can truly "colonize" it. It has very little atmosphere, and what there is is unbreathable. The best you could do there is survive.
