Not speaking because we are afraid to make a mistake seems to be a universal mistake. I believe that happens in all languages. But, in my experience, if you try, most people are cool and more than happy to listen and help.

The silent study is a great point. My friend from Mexico - who is fluent in English- told me that the best way to learn any language is to speak it.

I have always told my non-Spanish speaking friends to ALLways see English movies withOUT subtitles. Miserable for a couple of months but it WORKS

Such great advice -"Focus on the vocabulary you are going to use'"

There is a catch to this, though. Unless youre living in Peru, you're likely not surrounded by native speakers. So where do you get all of that listening practice from? Media. And media uses a much more extensive vocabulary. You have to learn vocabulary, the key is not to fool yourself into thinking that because you're memorizing all of this vocabulary that you're going to be any better at speaking tomorrow. But if you have any hope of understanding what someone is trying to tell you, you're going to need to have picked up their vocabulary at some point before your interaction with them.

The test to be able to speak spanish for my job requires you to know extensive vocab. All types of animals, plants, foods, restaurants, words for media and movie plots and book plots, words for industries and contract and much more. The job actually only uses on a very small set of vocab related to the business and its services. It's been interesting trying to pass this test as I will never need to talk to a customer about marmotas and robles and gaviotas and marismas or panaderias or mariscos or the plot to a movie.

Estadounidense. I attended a Spanish immersion program last year over the summer. I can now conjugate verbs quite well, and ask questions with a si o no answer. My writing skills have improved. My conversational skills have not. I appreciate your approach to the common vernacular, and particularly differences in Mexican Spanish from other areas.

You are so correct; I learned from a textbook to say, "Quisiera... y, Le presento mi esposa..." Who really says, "May I present my wife..." in conversation? Thank you for pointing out not using "Quisiera" Muchas gracias for su ayuda!

I agree with your suggestion of listening immersion. When I met the Senorita that would become my wife, I didn't speak any Spanish. I learned a lot by watching Spanish language TV. My wife likes to joke that my first Spanish Teacher was Huicho Domínguez.

Great advice in this video! One thing that helped me immensely was listening to Spanish language radio stations. I picked a couple of stations whose locale I knew from previous trips and started listening every day. Because I heard phone numbers, etc from the community call-in ads each day I was able to increase dramatically the speed with which I recognize number groups. The commercials, weather reports, public service announcements, and the talk radio programs also helped a lot. A bonus is now I am in to Latin American music!

As a Spanish interpreter, I think of following the meaning of the word than a direct translation. 9:57 so it’s like you said, but keeping that meaning you said above to help fix those problems, por vs para, and also helps a lot with the grammar without having to think about it much.

And thinking in keywords helps with listening. (Usually something we do in our first language but overthink in our target language) :)

Currently, I'm doing a secondary major with spanish language and can confirm that this is excellent advice. I'm not fully fluent yet, maybe a B1-B2, but this is the kind of thing that I've figured out in my journey of learning Spanish as a second language that has worked extremely well. This person would be an amazing college language professor if that's not what she already teaches. The way they teach foreign languages in American colleges is not always the most effective, so I think the Department of Education needs to start implementing this learning style into high school and college language courses.
