I have a @ 2006 Toro recycler. B&S engine. Last year I replaced the personal pace transmission and drive belt. Deck is in great shape as I use the wash port almost all the time and do yearly pm maintenance ( plug, air and fuel filters, oil, lube cables, ethanol free fuel when possible and Stabil added) This mower STILL starts on the 1st pull. Take care of your mower and it will reward you with many years of service.

I’ve owned the Honda for 1 year and it’s a beast. We don’t have a flat front yard and the select drive it super helpful. 1 pull start yet. Mulch option always. Super pleased with it. Also, every day I use it I clean it. Great video JB!!

I love my toro 2020 21385 super recycler. Being a honda fan boy with 4 honda cars i looked at the hrx but some of the negative reviews i read kept me from pulling the trigger. Im glad i purchased my toro befor the design change and price increase.I went with the toro branded engine cause of the sputtering issues with the briggs. I have no regrets. I just bought the toro sr mulching blade to test out.

Great comparison! I have the 2020 version (pre Vortex deck) of this Super Recycler, and my engine does sputter sometimes. Bought it over the HRX because of the stow-n-go (not much storage space at my house), maneuverability, and the shock absorbing handles that are good for bumpy yards. I mostly enjoy it and do not regret the purchase. Mulching quality is right on par with the mid-90s HRB215 and early 2010s HRN that I had prior to that. The 190cc Briggs has what feels like double the power of the standard HRN 160cc Honda motors. My grass is healthy and very thick, and the Briggs has never once stalled on me. The 1990s machine I'd get to stall maybe 1-2x a year, the 160cc HRN, more like 1-2x per mow lol one big con vs the plastic deck Hondas is the amount of grass build up I get, but I guess I would say it's not any worse than the steel deck Honda I had prior to this one.

I bought the Super Recycler. Can't complain. I have a 190cc Smart Stow already from 2016. The new one cuts much better, but my first one works fine and starts on first pull. The Smart Stow sold me. My two lawnmowers take up less space than 1 conventional lawnmowers.

Honda! or any budget lawn mower that has a honda engine on its deck, MTD and troy built use to come with honda engines at a affordable price. At 4:11 into the video I hate those drag flaps, I always take them off my personal mowers.

I’ve had my HRX217 since 2009, change oil, change filter once a year. Changed blades & rear tires once. Starts on first pull, still looks new. Mow yard every 4days during growing season.

May 2024, Honda has stopped making Lawn Mowers. I just called a local dealer, they have two left and I scored the HRX217VKA model! I'll be picking it up early next week. This video helped solidify my decision to go with Honda. I have a mower I bought about 5 years ago and am gifting it to my son. It's a Briggs and Straton engine (as most are) but at every mow it hesitates! The engine likely needs to be tuned up.

I'll stick with my Honda HRX 217HYA 200cc with hydrostatic transmission for the win 🏆 Have owned mine for over 6 years, zero issues.

I have had this exact Honda for 3 years. Absolute best push mower on the market. Now I read the manual but either I forgot or I'm a little dumb. Didn't realize it rear discharges until just the other day. 😅 I don't bag and prefer mulching anyway. But the grass is crazy here. It would struggle a little mulching 2 foot high grass but not discharging. Love this mower. Half assed pull and she starts.

I have both. For me it's Honda all day. Build quality, engine power and reliability, mulch cut, drive train. Only thing i like better on Toro is the blade clutch enabling me to drive the mower to different areas i cut in my yard at different heights without mowing.

My local dealer had one HRX 217 left. It’s mine now. Best push mower I had ever bought. Keeping my HRN 216 for backup since they are done making them

I like the Honda mower because they have blade controls where you can push with the motor on without the blades spinning plus they start up on the first pull and are easy to start

I have been wanting a smartstow Toro to save room and now watching this video, that is this same Honda that I am replacing. I am awaiting the Toro 190cc to arrive so I cannot compare them yet, personally. However, I have had that Honda HRX217 for about 8-9 years and still starts first pull. I have super thick grass and keep it at 4" cut without any problems. The deck is a non issue really, it is similar to a football helmet material and those are meant for taking a beating. My Honda still looks brand new. I take care of my sister-in-law's lawn and will leave it over there, so I will get to enjoy both of these mowers. Thanks for these great videos, I ordered the Toro after watchign your review video on it.

P.S. - I do the annual maintenance on the Honda religiously and keep an extra sharpened blade on hand to rotate every few cuts (I am a lawn nut). One thing I am struggling with is the thought of the "no oil change" Toro marketing. I believe I will end up removing the annual used oil and replacing it, but haven't made up my mind yet.

Very comprehensive review. I have owned the HRX 217-VYA for several years. I will never sell it. The Versa mow system and cut quality are far superior then all other walk behind mowers. The only thing I do not like is the Select Drive. I prefer the Personal Pace system of my Toro TimeMaster. Thanks again Sir for your information and energy!!!!

I have the HRX217K5VYAA. I got the Honda Roto-Stop blade control. That was the reason I bought it. I can run the engine without the blades engaged. Ine thing you may have overlooked was the size of the bag opening. So large you can dump leaves out of it faster with less fuss. Give the Honda two more points.

Picked up the HRX217 this morning. Your review sold me! Should there have been a green or blue dot on the box? The HRN216 models had a green dot on the box. Made the purchase at Home Depot.

The next up the line Honda hrx has the upgraded hydrostatic transmission with the speed shift. I haven’t used a better self propel system on a push mower.

how about the drive control on the handlebars of the Honda can you comfortably make a 180° turn around an let go of the drive lever while still holding on to the bale keeping it running I go back and forth alot

My new Honda mower has an open belt and pulley (no guard) under the deck. It looked like the Toro had one. That lack of protection could cause premature wear or failure of the drive. Really makes my mower susceptible to even moist grass clippings. Otherwise been loving this mower's performance.
