Both brilliant thinkers! I find Oppy's willingness to engage in a good faith debate really refreshing! Oppy's curiosity allowed the conversation to go into really interesting areas when it could have otherwise been 2 people talking pas each other. I would also love to see a Part 2 Digital Gnosis - thank for the content! : )

I felt that Bernardo started off very combative, but I love that he warmed up to Dr Oppy's open minded and thoughtful questions and even commented at 42:00 that the debate was a lot friendlier than he anticipated, almost as if to apologise for his initial antagonism. Great discussion!

Bernardo says that space and time are not actually fundamental, that these are just the dashboard that evolution has equipped us with. But does he propose a process other than space and time through which evolution equips beings?

How is the idealist position not one of simply presuppositionalism? Like Dr. Oppy said, with idealism it really seems that where you have to start is where you end up anyway. It’s just one giant assertion from start to finish with loose-at-best examples to roughly point to it

I am a Bernardo convert. I think his "mind at large" has been the experience of saints and mystics throughout history. Enlightenment could be the shedding of our false personal narratives.

The worst part of being an idealist has to be that in order to have a remotely intelligent conversation with someone who knows absolutely nothing about it, you have to do a TON of legwork to not sound absolutely insane and be dismissed outright. Not only do you have to tear down the idea that physicalism even makes sense to begin with—which is a hard sell to the average layperson—you have to get them to understand the nature of their own experience as it really is. Then, you can start talking about consciousness as base reality.
