Can I Explain the Schrödinger Equation in 60 Seconds? (reupload for #shorts)

The Schrödinger Equation is the key equation in quantum physics that explains how particles in quantum physics behave. You wanna know where your electron is going to go? That’s the Schrödinger equation you’ll need.

So why does it look so complicated? Well it’s because in quantum physics, when you are describing what a thing like an electron will do, it doesn’t follow the rules of particles it follows the rules of waves, and that’s what these psi’s are, they are wave functions.

Okay so an electron is a wave, and a wave can evolve in space and in time, but it can’t evolve in any old way, there are constraints about how it can evolve, and those constraints? That’s what the Schrödinger equation is telling us.

It says that over time the total energy has to stay the same. And this total energy is made of the kinetic energy, and potential energy. An example of a potential energy for an electron is just being in an atom.

So if you want to see what a quantum object will do in the future, you need to find the wave function that will satisfy all these bits of the Schrödinger equation.

Hey I quite like the shorts format because it is fun trying to distill concepts down to 60s. However, I don't like how YouTube is putting them in the main video feed. I'd think they should only be shown on the shorts shelf. Anyway, my way of getting around this will be to to clearly flag vertical videos with the thumbnail. The thumbnails of all my shorts will have black bars at the sides and say shorts in them so that if you are watching on desktop you can skip the vertical videos. Hopefully YouTube will improve this in the future (or just completely scrap it lol, I give it even odds at this stage :)

God I love solving wave functions and doing Schrödinger’s Equation. It’s so beautiful and rewarding when you write down lines and lines of partials in spherical coordinates and after 30 minutes you somewhat have an answer 😂😂😂

As a Physicist, I gotta say I’m quite pleased by this explanation. At university we were taught quantum physics without really getting an explanation of how the Schrödinger Equation was deducted, where it came from and what it represents. It took me 3 years to grasp it sufficiently to understand it for the most part, and even today I’m still learning new stuff, but this video definitely explains the most crucial points to better understand it, great job! 😃
