The first version of Path Tracing for Cyberpunk 2077 was added on April 11th 2023 as "technological preview" and since then the Path Tracing implementation was significantly improved:
○ Added ReSTIR GI (improves indirect lighting)
○ Added Shader Execution Reordering (improves PT performance, RTX 40 series only)
○ Added Opacity Micro-Maps (improves PT performance, RTX 40 series only)
○ Added DLSS Ray Reconstruction (improves denoising quality and performance)
○ Improved RTXDI quality
○ Improved the quality of existing DLSS Super Resolution implementation (essential feature to play with PT at comfortable FPS)
○ Improved the quality of existing DLSS Frame Generation implementation (essential feature to play with PT at comfortable FPS)
○ Numerous bug fixes

This is one of the few games where PT actually makes the setting you're in feel much more grounded and realistic. Seeing Misty for the first time with PT on was one of the first uncanny valley moments I've had in gaming in awhile and all of it was interactive without any cutscenes. People underestimate how effective good lighting can be at pulling a game's art direction and visuals together.

Path tracing removes a lot of the "video gamey" look to not just the surroundings but the NPCs as well. The weird eyelid/lip glow you see with rasterization even at max, is completely gone when path tracing is turned on. This delivers the most immersive realistic experience. Beautiful. Thanks for the comparison tests!

Once you get used to path-tracing it is difficult to accept rasterization in this game.

Fun thing is that the game is currently ray and bounce limited and future results will be even more visually striking somewhere in 2030 with more capable hardware. I'm dreaming to play this at 4K60 DLAA+8 bounces & 8 rays

As a lighting artist, I would say that applying PathTracing for CP2077 after the game development was over by just turning on "a mode" - was a shot in the air. This level of chance to improve or spoil, if speak about visual pleasant and artistic look. Lot's of scenes are getting better, and lot's of scenes worse. And when it is worse - it could be fixed SO EASY, if it was manually checked by the environment/lighting artists. Primarilly for portrete cam angles on characters, so many completely ruined faces with blackout shadows, nearly unreadable. And at the same time time to time the situation is just opposite, almost blacked silhouettes under classical lighting mode were restored by the physics of reflected lights in Path Tracing (3:49 for ex.). For locations it works mostly well, even great, just some exclusions when suppostedly dirty/dusty/rusty surfaces under PathTracing unexpetedly gets glossiness which absolutely ruins the location mood. All this are evidences of urgency and a little of chaos in the production. I believe CDPR won't let this happen in the sequel. The game overall is so good!

I picked up an OLED screen the other day. Nothing fancy, but I tested path tracing (to my surprise it runs well)

That paired with an OLED monitor truly gives off the most stunning visuals I've ever seen. Videos online just can't do it justice.

Here the next day still in awe while watching a visual comparison lol, but I cannot wait for others to experience it someday

I absolutely CANNOT wait for the next few 3-5 years as path tracing becomes significantly more ironed out and advanced and as more consumer hardware capable of path tracing becomes more accessible
