“Thirty Seconds to Mars, the American rock band formed in 1998 by brothers Jared and Shannon Leto, has experienced a significant shift in their musical direction and fan reception over the years. Once known for their alternative rock sound and energetic live performances, the band has gradually moved towards a more pop-oriented style, particularly evident in their recent albums. This transition has led to a decline in interest among long-time fans, with many expressing disappointments in the band's new musical direction and live show quality. Adding to the controversy surrounding the group is the island retreat owned by frontman Jared Leto, which has been the subject of much speculation and criticism. Some view it as a fan exploitation venture, while others see it as an extension of Leto's eccentric persona. Despite these challenges, Thirty Seconds to Mars continues to release new music and tour, though their once-passionate fanbase appears to be dwindling as they struggle to maintain relevance in the ever-changing music industry.” (Perplexity)

Jared Leto's ego grew so big, it became a third Leto brother/full-time member over time. It's a shame. A Beautiful Lie was peak 30STM.

If Ronnie Radke is The Homelander of the music scene, then Jared Leto is The Deep.

This video is everything I’ve been saying about them for years. I saw them live in a small club, probably back in ‘04, I think. I know A Beautiful Lie wasn’t released yet. They only performed 2 songs that would be in A Beautiful Lie. They weren’t the headliner…they were the opener. They were awesome. No ego, no production. Just a rock band playing a show. Now I wouldn’t go see them if I had free tickets.

Their self titled debut was a masterpiece. I wore that album out when it was released. A Beautiful Lie and This is War were different, but still pretty good. Everything after that, I had zero interest in. I’m all about change, and I’m not against switching genres. But I felt Jared’s ego got so inflated, they didn’t put any effort or feeling into the music. His celebrity sold the music instead of the music selling the music. You said it perfectly. It’s as if humans stopped making the music and just used A.I. Again, I’m not bothered by them not making the same album that they did 20 years ago (also I wish they did). I’m against not putting effort and feeling into it, knowing you’re so famous, it’ll sell anyway. That day I saw them as an opening act, twenty some years ago, in a small club was probably one of the best shows I’ve seen. Now it’s not even a band. It’s just both Leto brothers’ inflated ego on stage, with backing tracks. No thanks.

What 30 Seconds to Mars is now is a super far cry from what there was. It really is a shell of once it once was.

I am a former die-hard fan. Got my triad tattoo, bought the deluxe edition of LLF&D, went two times with the "golden ticket" experience to their shows, and even was an extra on the "Up in the Air" video. If it weren't for money, I would have gone to the Mars Island. Safe to say I had a heavy man-crush with Jared. Wanted to be him, look like him, sing like him. Also made a lot of friends thanks to going to the VIP experiences, and have very good memories of those times.

After America, I lost all faith in the band. Got my tattoo covered now. Hope they can turn it around, but really unlikely. Jared is an ego-maniac. The few interactions I've had with him, I could tell he's very full of himself. My impression is that after the Joker and Morbius, he flipped. Maybe all the hate got into him, and ruining 30stm could be his revenge with the world...

Can’t wait for Todd to do TrainWreckords for 30STM

I always felt like 30STM was at one point a great competitor/companion to MCR in their oddly specific subgenre of ultra-theatrical alt-rock that the 00s spawned. Ironic as hell that MCR's fanbase and people obsessing over their album-worldbuilding only grew after their breakup, while 30STM's nosedived despite them remaining together-ish.

I know the acting and the music are two separate things. But I could pinpoint the beginning of the downfall was when Jared Leto won the Oscar for Dallas Buyers Club in 2013-14.

Hi, fan of MARS here. Having seen them live twice in my lifetime, during the height of both This is War and Love Lust Faith + Dreams, I wanna go on record by saying… 30 Seconds to Mars were the greatest thing ever in my life once upon a time and their music inspired me in a positive way while in a dark period I struggled to get out of… that band… IS NOT THE SAME ONE IN AMERICA OR ITS THE END OF THE WORLD! I dont blame Tomo for quitting tbh, the band is currently running on autopilot while it feels like all of their songs are being handled by everyone on the music business EXCEPT for Jared and Shannon who spearheaded nearly every decision and helped create masterpiece after masterpiece. That band is gone! I don’t know if they’ll ever be able to make a proper comeback, but I’m holding onto the smallest veil of hope that Jared will wake up from whatever vegan crap he’s ingesting and realize that whatever the hell they’re currently doing IS NOT FUCKING WORKING!

My mom loves this band funnily enough. Took her to see them for her birthday this year (Kennyhoopla and AFI were opening so that was great) and before we even got into the theatre, security were asking people with lawn tickets if they wanted upgraded pavilion seats to make it look more filled in. Ive never seen this done before at any show at an amphitheater. During the show he started just calling people down from the lawn and upper bowl to just run down and fill in the seats themselves because his ego obviously couldnt handle seeing the empty seats in front of him. Such a weird night and performer

Jared had his best role in Fight Club when he was beaten unrecognizable. If only he was willing to humble himself from then on.

You pretty much hit the nail on the head, Luke. I saw 30STM in 2014 on their tour with Linkin Park, and I thought they were really good! But that version of the band really feels like it's from another world given where they are now. It's night and day, and I don't mean that in a good way.

On a side note, I loved the format of this video! I'd love to see more like this!

The self-titled record is truly phenomenal. I remember as a sophomore I was obsessed with that album (still am), and nobody had even heard of them lol

I saw them play a show at my tiny local venue (now defunct) and one of their tour guys came to me and asked me to record the show using the bands personal camcorder. What an experience; I’ll never forget it

When it comes to bands who went downhill, I can truly never forgive 30 Seconds to Mars for how painfully awful they became!!
Their current stuff is so bad that it makes Imagine Dragons look like Pantera, and that’s a very bad comparison.

As a Russian I was shocked that America got Gold. I think it was just listenings to get free 30StM stickers for local Facebook called Vk. I just played the album on mute to get these and didn't care for the album. P.S. A Beautiful Lie and This is War are more beloved in my country.

The fact that Jared Leto is 52 and now making music a 20-something e-boy would make is baffling.

Just to be clear though, Jared was method acting way before the mid 2010s, he was doing it in requiem for a dream and that movie came out before their first album. So i don't necessarily think it's fair to say that their music got worse because he was method acting. I don't like this band, i just wanted to clarify that

I gave up when America came out...and their live shows are basically Jared Leto singing karaoke to 30STM songs. There's hardly any live element, just backing tracks and samples. He doesn't even sing that much, he gets the crowd to sing most of the verses and chorus.
