I am from a small community in NJ. USA. We have a community of people from the Ukraine and they work hard to keep their culture alive. They have an Orthodox Church that is a big part of their lives. The ladies wear their folk costumes when they go to church. The church also has fund raisers where they sell homemade pierogies. We all rush to buy them - sometimes 6 dozen at a time! I felt such a connection watching Maria making them, too!
