Kinda hard to blame people for thinking this since there are two animated versions of how it happened:

- The first one was in the Storm Revolutions OVA when Danzo and other Foundation Members ambushed Shisui. While Shisui was distracted, Danzo sneaked behind him and stole his right eye.

- The second one was in the anime when Danzo attacked Shisui directly and Shisui put Danzo under a Genjutsu. Danzo used Izanagi to break free, punched the living hell out of Shisui, and ripped his right eye out in mid-air.

People forget that this aburame clan member was the same person who made obito cut off his arm to avoid dying. That should show how powerful this dudes poison was.

I also like how the anime portrayed it:

Danzō is seemingly beaten by Shisui but then uses Izanagi with an eye he had hidden and took that opportunity to rewrite his death and position himself to sneak attack Shisui.

He manages to pluck out Shisui’s eye but still can’t necessarily defeat Shisui and thereafter Shisui promptly escapes this encounter.

As many would agree that Konan technically won against Obito since he had to resort to Izanagi, and so did Shisui win imo.

Im sure that i saw shisui lose his eye when danzo plucks it out in an episode. There was no fight where do people get their information.

There are also three different canonicities of how Shisui died. In one of them, yeah, Danzo just beats him up and rips his eye out

He had two Kotoamatsukami. If Shisui were smart, he would have planned to use Koto on Danzo to stop him from manipulating the Uchiha and then used the other Kotoamatsukami on Fugaku, and he just has 3 tomoe Sharingan for ten years. Unless he somehow gets the Hashirama Cell from the Root after Fugaku and Hiruzen talk it out, and Hiruzen concedes, offering Fugaku a place on the Konoha Council of Elders, and promises more Uchiha in the ANBU, and fewer in the police force. Hiruzen would also think for a moment and consult with Koharu and Homura for a minute or two and then come back naming Fugaku the 5th Hokage. And Fugaku would be so surprised and afraid Danzo was going to accuse him of using genjutsu, but Danzo will just be sitting there, giving Hiruzen a vote of confidence in Fugaku thanks to Shisui's lingering genjutsu.

Honestly I feel like Shisui is very overrated, especially with the very little amount we saw of him. I guess the light novels do bring a little but it’s still wild how much people value him.

There are three versions of Danzo vs Shisui. The UNS version, the anime, and the light novel. All of them are different.
