My favourite tip: whenever I'm close to buying something on a whim (a coffee, new clothes, whatever), I'll move that amount of money out of my chequing account and into my savings account. Usually, knowing I've saved that money is enough of a dopamine hit to calm the urge! And if it's not, I just dig into my savings account to pay for the item (which hurts more, somehow).

Something that helps me as a homemaker, is to think of my husband at work and what his wage is. "How many hours did he have to work to pay for this item?". It helps me decide if those hours of my husband being away from our kids, myself and our home, was worth the item i want to buy. It really helps me with the impluse buys. Also to think of the things we are saving for and remember we will reach our goals faster if i dont bye all the things i want or THINK we need on amazon!

Managing money is different from accumulating wealth, and the lack of investment education in schools may explain why people struggle to maintain their financial gains. The examples you provided are relevant, and I personally benefited from the market crisis, as I embrace challenging times while others tend to avoid them. Well, at least my advisor does too, jokingly.

I grew up knowing the more you go shopping, the more you buy. My Mom only went grocery shopping twice a month. One large shop, one small. The large shop did take 2+ hours but she would do a freezer check/pantry check prior & went with an extesive list. She had a budget and stuck to it. The small shop was two weeks later and was for more fresh things that you go through fast.

I’ve been doing the once a week grocery buying for several years and I recommend it. I am very strict about it — if I run out of everything except oatmeal before shopping day and have to eat that for two days then next time I plan more carefully. I have come through this period of inflation spending about what I spent four years ago because I have learned how to shop more efficiently.

I take photos of things I don't need but want, in the shop, if I really want it I'll go back for it. I've realized that when I leave the shop I forget about it but then I see the reminder photo on my phone and remember again 😢😅

I work at a major supermarket here in Australia as an online shopper. I actually use the service myself, shopping each week via the app. I order the stuff we need then get it delivered to the boot of my car. This saves money because I don't impulse-buy in the shop itself (oooh, that's on special!).

This is why shopping at Aldi is a false economy because you save money on most food items but then you go to the centre of the store... afterwards, you walk out with your shopping, a wetsuit, and a trumpet. 😂

I totally agree with the wedding comment. Ours was about $1500 and our rings were about $200 each. I still wear mine after almost 30 years. I bought a slightly more expensive one after 20 years but it's the only jewelry I really wear.

Going out to eat isn't as fun anymore because tipping has gotten out of hand and so I would rather eat at home most of the time!

We spent $200 on both our wedding rings, they were custom made from an etsy artist. We have beautiful rings that fit our aesthetic, and we supported a small artisan. We got married at the court house in front of a judge and had a potluck BBQ at a friend's house after. We thought the idea of spending thousands on a wedding and reception was asinine. We also meal plan, because it saves our budget and as vegetarians we eat mostly fresh things so you want to only get the things you're going to actually use before they go bad. Little things add up over time.

You are so right about weddings! Married is married, there are plenty of ways to have a nice ceremony with the important people in your life without spending a fortune.

Love the grocery 1day a week tip! It really works! When I sat down and calculated how much I was actually spending at the grocery store versus what I budgeted to spend at the grocery store, it made me understand why my budget didn't work! I was going to the grocery store 2-3 times a week and impulse buying blowing the budget every month!

I am so glad you talked about having a small wedding and cheap rings. when my husband and i got engaged and married. the total cost was under 1, 000. we were able to pay that off quickly. though my family and his family wanted us to have a big wedding, everyone thought we were crazy.

One thing about putting something in the cart but not buying it right away - The platform will usually offer a discount for you to come back and buy and finish the purchase. I have worked in eCommerce and this is a strategy - better from the to make something than nothing but they like the traffic to come back.

Just thought I'd put this out there for anybody looking to spend less on a wedding/engagement ring. No matter if you want the classic diamond ring with gold bands or something different. My eldest brother remarried at the beginning of 2023 and for his wife he bought her a recycled wedding ring online, with a gold band and multiple diamonds. My 2nd eldest brother gave our grandmother's ring an engagement ring to his wife. My 3rd eldest brother went online and researched vintage wedding rings and got one for his wife.
If you don't want to spend a lot of money on a ring, your partner doesn't care about the price tag, then do some Google research. It's not hard to find something out there that you like both materialistically, aesthetically, and at a price you're willing to pay.

I do the 1st one a lot ! I have a huge shopping list for clothes but barely buy them ! And when I really feel the need to buy stuff to buy stuff, I buy stocks ! It gives me the same feeling than clothes but it s an investment 😂

I agree on the wedding. We got married in 2001. Our wedding was at my church, which did not carry a charge because I was a member. The women’s fellowship served with dessert, which was the only thing we served, no meal. My sisters in law did the flowers. My wedding ring was a small custom made one carat diamond. It cost $95. In all, I think our wedding may have cost $1000 if we count in the donations we gave to the church, my $100 wedding dress from the thrift store. (Still beautiful.) and our photographer. We had a fabulous day and a three day honeymoon given to us by our workplace and we did not go broke. It can be done.
