Goes to show how Tony's more of an inventor and creator: money is just a means to an end. He said so himself in the first movie, when he confronted Christine Everheart about medical advancements and "intellicrops": military weapons contracts were a means to an end.

Tony was so far of the curve, others couldn't even see the curve.

In the book version of this scene, Tony also considers using the tech for one of his suits, but canned the idea after hearing it would slightly dampen his kinetic defense, even if it would vastly improve defense against energy attacks. Later on, in the final confrontation with Vanko, he uses the nanoball’s glove to safely disable Vanko’s whip, proving its effective properties against energy. Imagine if he had an entire suit made out of it in one of the films.

It's a good scene, not just talking about his heart issues but actually showing Tony's desperation as all the tests fail.
