Bad Coach vs. Good Coach Scene

A role play that took place in one of management trainer, Judi Clements' classes for new managers. Judi demonstrates how to be a bad coach, and her trainees show how to be a good one.

It's all about choosing the right words. Don't attack the employee with dis-empowering personal attacks. Stay focused on workplace behavior. Be specific, offer training, and give reasonable goals.

Thank you for the post. I find it funny and useful, especially the Bad Coach. Regarding the Good Coach, I think she correctly models calm, understanding, concern, and recognizes the coachee as a valuable team member instead of disparaging him. But basically saying yes to the coachee's point of view, and send him off to training? What about the deadline? Shouldn't she personally show him, since Maria didn't bother? Better, have Maria and him outline the wretched service plans together tomorrow, making it also Maria's concern. The team would be building up stronger work relationships from this opportunity.

I am still amazed to find many true "bad coach" surviving in fortune 500 company, and some of them are at a high level in the org. The saddest part is i dont think they want to change.
