What Astronaut Revealed About Dream Chaser Shocked Boeing and even SpaceX…
While we were busy updating information about SpaceX's Dragon spacecraft or Boeing's troubled Starliner, we accidentally missed an equally important vehicle: Sierra Space's Dream Chaser.
Despite being developed by a smaller, newer company, Dream Chaser marks an exciting leap in space transportation, paving the way for more efficient and flexible missions.
For that reason, as the vehicle inches closer to its long-awaited maiden launch, it has space enthusiasts, especially astronauts more excited than ever.
What astronaut just revealed about NASA's space plane humiliated Boeing and even SpaceX.
What Astronaut Revealed About Dream Chaser Shocked Boeing and even SpaceX…
The news that Sierra Space's Dream Chaser will not make its first launch this year has disappointed many.
Initially, the spaceplane was on the manifest for United Launch Alliance’s second Vulcan Centaur flight but then failed to meet the launch date of September as ULA's expectation.
As a result, Sierra stepped aside so ULA could move ahead with its certification with the Department of Defense. No doubt ULA is eager to move forward with this high-stakes second launch: It’s the final step before the new Vulcan Centaur rocket can be certified to carry out national security missions for DOD. ULA flew the second Vulcan mission on October 4, leaving the question about the launch window of its partner.
What Astronaut Revealed About Dream Chaser Shocked Boeing and even SpaceX…
Fortunately, so far, the answer is found. Dream Chaser spaceplane's first launch or Dream Chaser Demo-1 (SSC Demo-1 ) will take place no earlier than May 2025. Talking about this, Canadian retired astronaut, Chris Hadfield shared on X, quote:
"This new spaceplane is about 6 months from launch. It's called Dream Chaser, to take people and cargo to/from the Space Station, landing on a runway. "
Tenacity – the first model of the Dream Chaser spaceplane which is going to join SSC Demo-1, arrived at Florida’s Kennedy Space Center on May 20, 2024. Eventually, the vessel will fly atop a ULA's Vulcan Centaur launch vehicle. For this demonstration mission under NASA's Commercial Resupply Services-2 program, it will carry about 3,850 kilograms to the International Space Station. The success of the mission will pave the way for the next seven cargo missions to the space station including crucial cargo delivery, return, and disposal services under Nasa's contract.

Can not wait to see the Dream Chaser fly. Can not come soon enough. Need cargo version to prove itself so human rated version can be flown sooner.

I have a TON of hope for this little sweetheart. Im so excited for it. Its a perfect Earth to Lunar surface workhorse eventually and hopefully scalable to larger versions. Sierra Nevada really has got something special here.😇🤠

The sooner the better. Starship needs as much of it's workforce as possible dedicated to moon/Mars efforts. The ISS is important in the overall space program but Musk and Shotwell are focussed on getting to Mars.

Forget the SLS and its problems, put that thing on Dragon and get it flying, SpaceX has proven they have the fastest turn around times, and would be a good match if it fits in the Dragon clam shells..

Very nice concept .. How expensive is going to be., to launch this One.

What's truly sad is that ULA trusted Blue Origin instead of SpaceX to supply Centuar engines. And, by association, Dream Chaser tied to that rocket. Hopefully, we will see it used with future stations.

Would be nice if you could stick that thing on top of a Falcon 9 or Falcon Heavy. I bet you can put at least a couple of those inside a Starship as well.

It's not the only space plane in the country- there's the Boeing X37, which has been flying for years. Currently monopolized by the military, but a well proven design; im sure if nasa asked for one, Boeing would take their money.

The conversion of 10, 000 feet to kilometers should result in approximately 3 kilometers, not 3 meters. This distinction is crucial for accurate measurements and calculations.

I feel hopeful about Dream Chaser type ships.

Shocking news ex-astronaut would prefer to land on a runway closer to home.

I am curious if Lockheed Martin has done the reentry analysis and helped with the tile design. This will put them at a great advantage relative to Space X. Lockheed has a large legacy and experience with hypersonic vehicles and reentry.

Let me be sarcastic here. It fits nicely into a Starship cargo bay. Maybe two of them. And on top of a billion USD expensive throw away rocket - nice try. 4 ton payload. 4 tons. 4 freaking tons. Starship laughs.

There are no runways on the Moon or Mars

10, 000 feet is a lot more than 3 meters. 😂

Yeah, but is it really ready? Is it is it ready? It needs to be like right now.

This would not shock SpaceX. The SpaceX starship is meant to land on Mars. The space plain can not you can even send the crew dragon to Mars, and it would survive, unlike the space plain. I don't see how SpaceX would be shocked because they are focused or something bigger.

Boeing should have invested in Dreamchaser.

I'm not sure what the the Canadian astronaut said that was shocking? Dream Chaser is a good idea that's well behind schedule. Even if the Dream Chaser works as hoped, an approved crew version won't be available for at least four or five or more years. That would be 2030. As far as the tiles go, SpaceX is not there yet on the tiles. We'll see in the near future where they stand on the tiles.
