In a departure from its post-WWII stance, Germany plans to establish a permanent military deployment in Lithuania. Looks like it might be time to bust out the caution tape...

As a german I can say you are making much more out of this as it realy is - germany had a much larger and more capable military in the 90s and early 2000s

I like your content a lot. But as a German - I am sorry - the insinuation that Germany in the foreseeable future attacks it’s neighbors is insane. You are way of the mark here. Germany didn’t ask for the deployment of this brigade. Lithuania did.

Germany attacking Poland or even Poland feeling insecure alltogether from Germany seems to be pretty outlandish and unthinkable. Pretty much all of Europe cheers for Germany to step up a gear or two in terms of military spending and bulking up their force.

Germany seems to be damned if it re-arms ("they are a military threat - remember the Nazis") and damned if it doesn't ("naive, cowardly pacifists expecting everyone else to protect them").

As an Australian who's spent time in Germany, I see no problem with Germany stepping up a bit more as culturally its very wary of conflict and is deeply cogniscant of its past. America has been signalling its disinterest in Europe for quite a few years now so of course Europeans will take their security into their own hands and given Europes interdependence a internecine war between eu members is nigh on improbable.

It warms the cockles of my heart to see people waking up to Peter’s often ridiculous take on things.

I’m so tired of people treating present day Germany like the Germany from 80 years ago. It’s insane to think that Germany should in any way make Poland nervous.

Just yesterday you said that Germany is incapable of being anything meaningful militarily, because of demographiscs. And today it is already a threat. This is why I just don't buy into this imminent demise of Germany. It might be replaced as the biggest economy of the EU by France, but to say that Germany is going to be irrelavant is an overstatement.

The Germans pay more respect to the reality of their history than we do, I'm not worried about them re-arming... 75 years is enough time to have generations of people enmeshed and invested in the European project, and I don't see that changing just because they're also becoming a serious security partner.

It is not the first time Germany has a foreign base in the post WWII. In 1963 they made an agreement with Portugal (my country) to establish an air force training facility in Beja. They stayed there until 1993. The military base then reverted to the Portuguese Air force and was recently converted to a civilian airport. It was a very positive collaboration with the Germans, and they are missed.

As long as Russia is kept in check, I am not terribly concerned about Germany regaining its military. In fact, I'd argue it is long overdue.

As a German, I had to laugh so hard at this video. You can't be for real. Do you even know the Germans? Do you remember the 5000 helmets, Germany was willing to donate at the beginning of the war in Ukraine? That's the Germany I know and at the heart still is like that. They only made a 180° turn because of peer pressure, those small minded, lawn mowing bureaucrats are unable to _really_ care about any other country for many generations to come (other than making money).

Peter doesn't understand the EU. Yes, we Poles have some contending economic interests within the EU, but Germany is our largest trade partner and an ally. Period. We burried the past long time ago, no matter what some nationalistic assholes might say.

I welcome a more forward-leaning Germany from a military perspective. The West needs more countries to step up in order to dissuade Putin from doing anything (more) stupid in the future.

That's a wild take. The world is a vastly different place in 2023 than it was 70-100 years ago. The implication that Germany building up its military has any similarities to WW1 and WW2 and that "today they're not our enemies" followed with "Has that ever ended well? Oh no." is wild.
The more I hear this guy be wrong about things I know about, it makes me question how often he's wrong about things I'm largely ignorant of.

As a Swede my take is that we need a stronger Europe to stand up against aggressors. Germany has worked through and is very cognoscent of the horrible path they were on 80 years ago. Looking at the current state of US politics I am infinitely more worried about US heading down that path. Russia is on it full bore. We need a strong Germany and a strong Europe.

His previous video explained how Germany would cease to exist as an industrial power after 2030. Now I’m supposed to be worried they’ll somehow become a military power? After decades of atrophy post Cold War?
