I hope this helps! Let me know you like the video and tell me your own methods in the comments, for knowing when its time to change the needle!

I rarely changed my needle until I started to sew with a sewing buddy. She stressed the importance of a new needle, and she regularly used a new needle when she started a new project. Needles are cheap, fabric and your time is not. I noticed a Hugh improvement in the look of my stitches with a new needle, and now follower her advice.

How embarrassing I sew a lot and only change my needle when it breaks! Now I understand why my machine sounds different. Thanks heaps. Also would love a vid on different needles and their use.

Evelyn appears to be genuinely happy to be with us. I feel so welcome at this channel, and by extension, if she invited us to her workshop or home, I would believe that she really wants to help us.

I break needles so often (quilting and denim) that I think I never consider these tips much, but I learned so much in 5 minutes! Always sending you love from across the Seas! You help us so much! Those dresses behind you and what you are wearing! So lovely!

In designschool (20 years ago) we learned to run our nail down the needle. If it felt like there was a bump on the tip, it was time to change the needle🤗

My dad worked for awhile sewing custom automotive upholstery. He taught me to gently pinch the needle and run my fingers down to the tip checking for any rough spots or burrs. Sometimes if you sew over pins there will be some roughness.

I will be looking out for those clunky sounds from now on - I always thought my bobbin case was loosely inserted or something, now I realise it's a blunt needle! Thankyou Evelyn. You should totally do a video on adjusting bobbin case lower tension - not alot of new sewers know that you have to do that and it's something that I struggled with for a long time until I knew that I had to adjust it. It fixed 90% of the problems I run into on my machine xx

I change needles based on the type of fabric I'm sewing. If I'm using the same type of fabric, I will change the needle after 2-4 projects and find listening to how my machine sounds helpful. Great tips, Evelyn! Thanks for sharing.

Yes do make a video on different needles for different uses, fabrics etc. Also different brands, different quality's, what the sizing means.

Yes, please do a video on different types of needles for different fabrics. Love your videos!

It’s such a huge relief to know that I am completely on the same page when it comes to changing needles! I do alterations mostly, so I am constantly changing out sizes/types and you’re right, there is no way to keep precise track of how many hours it’s been used! I must say, however, seeing this video prompted me to change out my serger needles and to clean and oil my machines...that, at least, I do pretty regularly! Your videos are so fun...thank you!

Thank you so much for your videos. I had a terrible time with bird nesting last week and while everyone and the manual said tension and bobbin winding I knew that wasn’t the problem. No one said anything about changing the needle.

Such good sewing tips lately on the little things that you think are too stupid to ask about, but that really bother you. Thanks!

Please, make that video about which needle is for which fabric! Thank you!

I find that a blunt needle will cause a woven fabric to pucker a bit when stitching (particularly if the fabric is quite fine, like a poplin or muslin) and the needle makes a sort of clicky sound when sewing. Then it's time to change the needle!

Loved this video... Well i don't know much about sewing machines... But i can tell you about the embroidery machines...almost same criteria for needle change..
1. You are having thread breaks. Coz if needle is not sharp enough... It cannot bore well into the fabric... And you have thread breaks... Change it..
2. Stitching quality changed quite a lot from start of using new needle... Change it.
3. Machine is noisy stitching heavy fabrics like denim... Change the needle..
4. If machine skipping stitches... Its not a needle fault... Your hook timing is out... Set the hook timing...
5. Feel the needle... Not sharp enough.. And all of the above till no. 3. Then simply change it...
6. Just put a needle change date label on your machine... Every time you change needle to avoid confusion
.. I can always help.. For embroidery machine trouble shooting...
Use the best needles like titanium plated... If you hate changing needle.

I do what you do, I change my needle with each new project that I start. It really cuts down on problems with my machine. And, thank you for your videos!
