NASA will announce today whether the Boeing Starliner is safe enough to take the Starliner crew home from the International Space Station or if the crew instead will take a SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft home next year. Join us for LIVE coverage of the NASA news conference announcing their decision on the Boeing Starliner crew.

The Boeing Starliner launched on a test flight to the International Space Station (ISS) on June 5 with two astronauts, Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore. The mission was only supposed to last around a week. But problems arose with the Boeing Starliner spacecraft, and NASA has delayed the return flight home of Williams and Wilmore while NASA researched the issue with the Starliner and decided if the spacecraft was safe enough to take the astronauts home. The backup option would be to have the crew take a SpaceX Dragon capsule back to Earth in February of 2025. Today NASA will announce its decision in a press conference. In this interactive live stream, host Steve Lookner brings you live coverage of NASA’s announcement of its decision on the Boeing Starliner crew (which will be revealed in a press conference), and he’ll also read your comments and questions on the air!

The helium leak was reported Live during countdown by a technician. There was time to stop the launch.

A technician was very clear when she stated the ship was venting helium. Listen to the launch. Why didn't they stop?

Space may be the final frontier but it’s made in a Hollywood basement

Probably already mentioned in the chat: NASA's Gemini program in the 1960s included space walks from a depressurized crew capsule (no airlock).

It's shocking to me how many things these NASA engineers are just now learning about. The complex physics inside the thrusters that they're 'still learning about', unexpected expansion and swelling of parts, the 'cross-talk' problem of one burner's heat unexpectedly re-lighting another burner that shouldnt be burning... All of these things seem like things they should have a solid understanding and knowledge of PRIOR to launching this thing into space with people on it. Did they not do any testing of these components on the ground first?

Edit: 1:51:00 he confirms they in-fact did Not test it on the ground first, saying it's too difficult so instead they just used computer models and theories. Wow. So maybe should have sent up some unmanned missions for the first few runs as they test and collect data? This seems incredibly reckless and negligent. They say with 100% confidence Starliner will fly again in the future... I'm not so sure it'll even return to earth in one piece, and clearly NASA thinks the same otherwise they wouldn't be using Space-X to have them return. Even if they do miraculously get it back down, I don't think any astronaut in their right mind would trust that vessel and this crew again.

Thank goodness they get to go home in a Dragon but no surprise that they will be sending Starliner back to earth unmanned. February is a long time to wait.

How are they going to get to vote for US President this November if they're not home until February?

I would start off with DARPA where someone can come up with some type of far-fetched concept to receive money from the Federal Government(s).

Boeing seems to be messing up everything lately! there planes are failing and now there capsule, plus there on the news almost everyday with negative coverage! seem to me that they need a changing of the guard on the top!

I'd wait a year to avoid depending on Boeing. Seriously.

I suspect that two must be left alone. I suggest it should be the corporate interlopers. Tragic.
