In a version of my country it has sadder version of a melody and it's about William Taylor and Sally Gray instead of lady gay. And the song was also named Sally Gray instead of William Taylor.
As a kid I thought the story is Mulan reference but later I found this original shanty and I was like Oooooh- I get it now XD
