Dota and especially CS have been games for as long as I am alive. They captured that early 2000s feel; fun for those who want a casual experience and rewarding for those aiming to be competitive

I think the main difference that DOTA has from every other game in the same genre is that it's beginning was a game made by it's community and was a group project from various people trying to improve the game, it was a community of people who truly loved the game enough to make it better and share it. The entire community contributed for the same game they were passionate about and from there it was passed on to the next generation and so on. So to me I believe that from the very first Defense of the Ancients the game already had a soul made from it's original contributors and that's what makes it different DotA was game built from the collective though of many who truly appreciated the game and wanted to add something new, they built a game entirely from 2 already existing games.
DotA wasn't built and reconfigured by one team it was very open to change from rhe beginning and I think thats what makes it different from other games its origins and how the community is still open to make custom games inside it, unlike other games like League of Legends, HoN, etc... where you play what the devs make in DOTA you can make and share a custom game from the same resources but end up in an entirely different gameplay.
A good example for it is auto chess which is a game made by someone in the community and shared it, from there it turned into a huge hit to the poit that other mobas started to make games similar to it.

One of the best, if not the very best, competitive online game ever made period. An innovator that invented captains mode and still holds the record of the most bans possible in captain's mode picking phase(14). Key to its success is its blessed one man balancing team solely focusing on balancing the game at pro and high level play. That may seem unintuitive for a game with a big enough playerbase just to mostly ignore their suggestions(and their whinings), but it has kept the game in great shape to such an extent that it also boasts having one of the highest character pick variety in pro play in any competitive game. Idc if it aint giving my soul back, this game was worth it for me and seeing how there's still so many oldheads playing I'm not alone on this.

As a kid who played dota right from the beginning, Dota and cs 1.6 always has a place in my heart, i remember comming back from school everyday, my parents were strict and allowed me only 3-4 hours to play, i would spend half in dota and half in cs, these games really gave me good memories❤
