When to manage someone up or OUT

Managers can feel uneasy making the tough call of when to end an employment of a team member

If this is unclear, there are some upstream steps that may be missing from your management routine, such as:

- Clear expectations
- Talent assessment
- Improvement plans
- Timeframes

It's super important to not spend all your energy on the struggling talent, but to take equal care with stretching your best performers

Here are the categories I use when evaluating talent with respect to a specific time period and in a role (a.k.a. this is not a life / career sentence, it is a point in time):

- High potential currently stretched
- High potential ready for a stretch
- Consistent performer and good fit in role
- Inconsistent performer challenged in current role
