The nurse is visiting a 76-year-old patient to check on the progress following a right hip replacement 6 weeks before. However, during the visit, the patient reports some symptoms suggestive of sinusitis. Thus the nurse explores possible reasons for a patient's poor sleep and the symptoms that suggest acute sinusitis (inflammation of the sinus lining at the back of the nose). The nurse reassures the patient that the condition is usually self-resolving and not serious. Hence the nurse recommends self-help treatments and stresses that the patient needs to see GP only if there is no improvement in one week so that the GP can prescribe appropriate treatment to rule out other conditions.
