The best way, in my humble opinion, is to pull four cards down sequentially, backjogging the last before throwing the overhand packet on top, then cutting at the back jog, reversing the order of the four cards and again throwing everything else on top. The effect (properly timed) is a 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 shuffle, done twice...preserving the full-deck stack. The mechanics are easy, but it takes practice to do it with apparent sloppiness which is what creates the illusion.

I use a different method for a false overhand that I think is a fair bit more convincing. This works, and I think it would convince most people, but I’ll stick with mine because I really want to make it extra convincing. I did not create the method. My preferred method uses a concept similar to a jog shuffle. In a jog shuffle (this is not the full false shuffle), you take roughly the top half of the cards and toss them into your non-dominant hand. On top of that, peel off one card individually and outjog it towards yourself. Then shuffle the rest of the cars on normally. What you’ve essentially done is maintain the order of the top half of the deck and move it to the bottom with a card facing towards yourself. As you square up the deck, take your thumb and pull down on that outjogged card so that you catch a break between that card and the shuffled portion of the deck. Shuffle that bit normally again until you reach a small chunk of cards above the break. Toss those down onto, then peel off one card singly, and then toss the entire rest of the deck on top. So, you have managed to retain roughly a half deck stack with an overhand shuffle. Usually that’s enough. However, if you want to maintain a full deck stack, the method can be modified slightly.

To keep a full deck stack, start off by tossing roughly 1/3 of the cards off the top of the deck. We’ll label this section as section 1. On top of that, peel off 4 cards one at a time. Leave the 4th card outjogged towards you. With the remaining section, peel off about half of that directly on top of section 1. We’ll call this section 2. So what the deck should look like, from bottom to top, is section one (with 4 cards), outjogged card, and section 2 directly on top of section 1. With that last section, drop the whole thing outjogged away from you. This is section three. So, again, from bottom to top, we have section 1, outjogged card, section 2, and an outjogged section 3. So we need to perform a shuffle to reverse this order. When you square up, with your thumb, press down and in on that outjogged card, creating a break between it and section 2. With your right hand middle and ring fingers, put them on section 2 as you press up slightly on section 3 as you square up. You square up section 3 with the index of your right hand (or dominant hand). Allow section 3 to just drop into your non-dominant hand. Throw all of section 2 (everything above the break) on top of section 3. Peel off the 4 cards individually, reversing the order of those cards, and throw all of section 1 back on top of the deck. That is how to maintain a full deck stack with an overhand shuffle and to make the shuffle look really convincing. It will take some practice, but it’s worth it.

Honestly, though, if I want to do a really convincing false shuffle sequence, I’ll use a pull-through riffle shuffle with a false triple cut. Steve Draun did the original version of that, and it looks really really convincing.
