I didn't know that "o" with "m" & "n" rule. Thank you!

These are the little rules you just forget about when youre a native english speaker. I had to relearn proper phonetics and these videos are so helpful with rules!

Still an element of a sight word though

I helped my little cousin with this word and also said the "ome" in "some" makes an "um" sound. Then later in the text he did the same thing but with the word "home." I went to correct him and he got confused. Can someone help me come up with a rule for that? The best answer I came up with was "English is weird" 🤣

Funnily enough, i knew both english and french as a kid and I only ever formally learned to read in french. I did learn how to read phonetically though. To read english i simply taught myself to sound out the word with a french accent and then add a english accent to whatever I was saying. With enough practice I gradually learned to read in english as well.
On top of that, I think youtube and google had a major part in improving my spelling since eachtime I tried to write down a word in the search bar according to what it sounded like, google/youtube was pretty successful at correcting me, which helped me to learn what words actually looked like. Kids brains are crazy

Thank you!! there are so few true sight words. Teaching the few exception words is much mor helpful when they really know phonics. There are only so many sounds and rules - not that many!

Funny, I started learning English in fifth grade and nobody ever told us any of this.. They give you a new word and its sound and that's it. No explanation whatsoever. I had no idea that so many rules to this chaotic language exist. But to be honest I'm glad that the first language I had to read, German, was so much easier - you can read almost any unknown word in German correctly (with very few exceptions).

If I had a teacher like you when I was little, the whole education system would look different.

Okay, but…how would you teach a child to read the word island with phonics?

It is a very basic word, and serves as a setting for many children’s stories. It is not a “hard word”.

The answer is that…they will need to memorize it….like honestly, this just seems way more complicated. You expect a 6-8 year old to remember that the E is silent, and for some random set of letters, the sound the vowel makes is different?

I’m not saying that pure memorization is the best, or even a good way, I’m just saying that phonics doesn’t have all the answers either, because the English language is really hard to learn.

I learned how to read when I was 4 and I'm 8 now it's been 4 years😂

If you had a course I would have bought it. I can't spell words without autocorrect at all.

I teach my kids that it is strong man final silent e: it makes the other vowel say it's name. Works for many final silent e words.

Do you have any videos about the silent letters??

I am happy to have found your channel. I'm trying to teach my 5 year old how to read and got confused with how to teach her sight word because she already know how to blend the words using the sounds. You're really great at what you teach. Thank you.

If "o" is weird because of the "m, " then we should probably pronounce them together. "s" "om".

There is no logic in English… every word has an exception.
