How to edit your windows Hosts file

A step by step, in-depth process on how to edit your windows hosts file.

Very brief steps:
1. Open your Hosts file (%windows%/system32/drivers/etc)
2. open hosts file using a text editor
3. delete the 5 lines of unwanted redirects
4. Save as to the desktop with the name "hosts" with the filetype "all files"
5. delete the hosts file in the etc folder
6. move the hosts file from the desktop to the etc folder

out of all the people on youtube doing this..you are the one that did it right and explained it well without those stupid antics and gimmicks. it kept on saving it as a txt file and i couldnt get it NOT to do that. you really showed how it's done AND when you edit it again, after removing the .txt, it saves just fine now! TY

Real quick, "Folder Options"
Is now called "File Explorer Options" in Control Panel. Hope that helps.

Thank you so much! this is probably why I wasn't able to block any website. I was saving as txt and directly to etc.

When using notepad, you are forced to save the file as a ".txt". You must then change the file type by unhiding the extension under "folder options" and then delete the ".txt" part in the filename.
If you use Notepad++, you can skip this as Notepad++ allows you to save the file with no extension.

The windows hosts file does not need to be messed with unless you know what you are doing.

Out of the box, you don't need to edit the windows hosts file for any reason.

The windows hosts file filters your internet. If you don't need to edit it, please don't!
