Born in Chicago, raised in the suburbs, parents are from Detroit suburbs so we visit family often. This is the most accurate depiction of the two cities I have ever seen

Detroit and Chicago both play an important role in our society, Detroit cultivated the assembly line starting the automobile boom while the first skyscraper was constructed in Chicago these 2 cities have left an impact on the world we live in

As a person from the Chicago suburbs, I thought this was funny. Anyway, you should do Washington (state) vs Oregon, California vs Idaho, or Arizona vs New Mexico.

Chicago flag lore: Initially the flag had just two stars when it was adopted in 1917, but it changed to three in 1933 and then a fourth in 1939. Each six-pointed star (six points were chosen because no other flag had this when it was made) represents an event in Chicago's history. The Great Chicago Fire of 1871, the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893, the Century of Progress Exposition of 1933, and the establishment of Fort Dearborn in 1803. And each point on these stars has a meaning. The three white bars represent the North, West, and South Sides of Chicago. The top sky-blue bar represents Lake Michigan and the North Branch of the Chicago River, while the bottom bar represents the South Branch of the river and the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal

Detroit flag lore: The lower hoist (left) quarter represents France, which founded the fort and settlement in 1701, with multiple gold fleurs-de-lis. The upper fly (right) quarter represents Great Britain, which controlled the fort from 1760 to 1796. It has three gold lions on a red field, imitating the Royal Arms of England. The lower fly has 13 red and white stripes and the upper hoist has 13 white stars on a blue field, for the US. Two Latin mottos read Speramus Meliora and Resurget Cineribus, meaning "We hope for better things" and "It will rise from the ashes", which was written by Gabriel Richard after the Great Fire of 1805. The seal is a representation of the Detroit fire which occurred on June 11, 1805. Only one building was saved from the flames. The figure on the left weeps over the destruction while the figure on the right gestures to the new city that will rise in its place.

Big L for leopold for not mentioning the Polish majority in Chicago. It litterarly has more Polish "people" (?) than Warsaw.

As a truck driver, Gary is truly the scariest place to exist in for any amount of time.

Metro Detroiter here, yes the potholes are the most awful that I have ever seen. Michigan is known to have the worst roads in the whole of the U.S. Once you go "Up North" the roads aren't as bad (less people/drivers). Other Midwest states with virtually the same climate have much nicer roads though. This summer also seems to have the most amount of construction I have ever seen in my life in the metro area.

Im from Detroit your pretty accurate overall but the tap water is a L. flint had lead in there water but only because they switched off the Detroit water system to try and save money. Detroit gets its water from lake huron and its quite fresh and very high quality some of the best for a major city in the us. I've drunk tapwater for decades and ive never had any issues with the taste nor has it made me sick.

And the two cities are hot dog and pizza cities as well! Germans brought their food culture with them to Chicago, particularly the Vienna sausage. This worked well in Chicago, which was the meatpacking capital of the world and a leader in the industrial food market. The hot dog was cheap, delicious, and could be topped with “nutrients” in the form of condiments, which helped it take hold during the Great Depression. Fluky’s (no longer in business) sold the first “Depression Sandwich, ” featuring mustard, pickle relish, onions, a dill pickle, hot peppers, lettuce and tomatoes in 1929. It cost a nickel. Celery salt on the hot dog became a thing thanks to many north side celery farms. Thus the Chicago-style dog was born!

Hot dogs (which they call Coney dogs) became a thing in Detroit because of many Greeks who escaped the Balkan Wars. Before moving to the Midwest, they stopped at Coney Island and had Nathan's world-famous hot dogs. They were so impressed that they wanted to spread it wherever they went and came up with their own recipes. Detroit-style pizza became a thing thanks in part to the car industry! It was invented in 1946 at a place called Buddy's by Gus Guerra. Gus was searching for a high-end pizza pan to create the perfect pizza until he realized something. Detroit's auto assembly plants used blue steel utility trays used to hold parts. For these plants, they were just a thing to hold parts...to Gus, it was a Sicilian-like deep dish pizza.

As a Chicagoan, I can confirm everything said here is 201% true.

I can explain The Bean: Its real name is the Cloud Gate! It was sculpted by Indian-born British artist Anish Kapoor and constructed between 2004 and 2006. It got its nickname The Bean from its shape, a name Kapoor initially disliked, but later grew fond of. The Bean is completely made up of stainless steel. It was created by putting together 168 massive steel plates and welding them shut to create a seamless finish. The inside is largely made up of a solid wooden structure. The interior is made up of two large metal rings that connect by a framework. This framework is similar to what you might see on a bridge.

This allows the weight of the sculpture to be on the two end points, which creates the “bean shape”. In addition, the Bean’s stainless-steel exterior is connected to the frame with flexible connectors. This allows the plates to expand and contract depending on weather changes. Drawing in inspiration from liquid mercury, Cloud Gate was originally designed with the Chicago skyline in mind. The artist wanted something that would draw in the skyline to the work, thus the reflective features were his main focus. The sculpture gets a deep cleaning and is washed with 150 liters of liquid detergent twice a year. On a daily basis, city workers give it a good power hose and wipe down.
