we've been told about this our whole lives, so I think we tend to be somewhat desensitized to the degree of utter insanity that everything about this building was.

Even more tragic - it is estimated 1, 000 000 plus wild animals killed in spectator sports.

It was sometimes flooded so there could be battles between naval ships. Another testament to outstanding and innovative Roman engineering.

I was so lucky to visit the colosseum. It’s huge you need like 2-3 days to really see it all

I'd like the Colosseum to be rebuilt and used for concerts, large orchestras, dances from that time, and a large restaurant. ❤

It’s a know fact actually that ancient Roman’s preferred watching horse races rather than people fighting, the coliseum could host horse races but it was usually held in the near by Circus Maximus

I have been here and the scene of it really makes me shiver at the thought of the death of the gladiators.

There are old Roman remains under Budapest, most of which have been excavated, but also in other places in Hungary, and there is also a certain Roman road - in good condition - that was built at that time. There are also remains of 2 coliseums, nicely restored and the other one at Aquincum, but there is also a larger open-air museum there.

As far as know, not every gladiator was a slave or criminal. Some joined to pay debt, for glory or even to gain some political influence.
Also deaths were not so common, which makes sense when you realize that keeping a well trained gladiator was a pretty costly investment. Why would someone readily kill their assets?

Finally, my favorite curiosity, though debatable among historiansthere were naval battle (naumachia) held in the coliseum. They could flood it with water and have war ships fight inside.

There's definitely no underground parking that's for sure

only a small percentage of gladiators died in battle.

fighting to the death is a myth no lanista would spend all that time and money on training just to have them die
average gladiator fought maybe 3 4 times a year
they had referees to watch for cheating and severe injuries
thumbs down is also wrong we can blame fonzie for that

They ought to construct a replica of it in the vicinity of Rome, for the purpose of amusing Tourists in the evenings? I don't mean Slaughter, but to capture the atmosphere of being there in those days?
