Titanic: “It is fated, I’ll take you with me.”

Charles Lightoller: “No thanks, I’ll die on my own time.”

This story only covers part of his adventures. He was shipwrecked on an Island in the Indian Ocean as a teenager. He survived a fire on a ship which the crew fought all the way to port. He also panned for gold during the Yukon gold rush.

People aren't perfect. But it's important to give them the credit they deserve alongside their criticism. This was yet another well made video ^_^ thank you.

When you mentioned his youngest son, his eldest son, the rescue at Dunkirk and his maneuver in evading the Stuka, I figured that it looked familiar...because I saw it in the movie 'Dunkirk'

It's amazing that Lightoller was the inspiration for the civilian captain in the movie.

Fun fact: Before Dunkirk, he also did scouting missions with his wife across the English Channel disguised as an normal civilian boat. In one of those scouting missions, an german patrol boat decided to check on them. Before it was too late, Lightoller grabbed an shot cup and an bottle on the lower decks and pretended to be drunk. This actually fooled the germans and they continued on to be very helpful on the fight against the Nazi regiment. If Yarnhub ever notices this, I recommend doing an part 2, because this was an very important part of his life.

Unfortunately, in the early days of modern naval warfare a lot of the old hands had a strong bias against submariners, and for a surprisingly long time submariners were treated as pirates who deserved to be shot

Here is an excerpt from the excellent book Hunter Killers, by Ian Ballantyne

‘They’ll never be any use in war and I’ll tell you why: I’m going to get the First Lord to announce that we intend to treat all submarines as pirate vessels in wartime and that we’ll hang all the crews.’

Admiral Sir Arthur Wilson, Controller of the Royal Navy, 1901

I happen to be a relative of Sylvia Lightoller, his wife. I met the old girl when I was 10 & 12y and she was nearly 90. Tough as nails. She had a club foot. She liked her whiskey, much to the horror of her Methodist relatives and she also loved Creme de Menthe.
And of course the character in Dunkirk is based on him.
They also did a little spying together on the emerging German Navy in the 1930s.
My father compared notes with her on Dunkirk vs his experience of Greece and Crete.

Forget about Violet Jessop "Miss Unskinkable"! Charles Lightoller is the real deal!

My great grandfather was involved in Dunkirk. He felt ill on the journey back across the channel and so he went below deck to rest. When he woke up, he went up deck and found everyone dead from what might have been a Stuka attack!
