Wait for it. It won't really matter in the very beginning when starting as an engineer in training. Many companies have education allowance which can be used for getting MBA later.

I’m taking masters in engineering management after 20 years of professional experience. I have family, four young kids. It’s hard but manageable. The good thing about my situation is that every subject makes more sense to me now, it wouldn’t make sense had I take it after undergraduate degree. I mean I could get a diploma but being a fresh graduate, you wouldn’t be trusted right away to make strategic decisions, you’re there for operational tasks. My advise to wait until it makes sense for you to take it like when you’re transitioning to become a manager because you’re so good at being an engineer, then go for it.

If somebody who is an engineer could answer my question I would be very grateful.

I'm a mechanical engineering student who is looking to work with electric vehicles. Although I'm an engineering student, I'm a businessman at heart. I love being on stage and talking about products and breaking down the facts to explain the technical side of a project to people who may not know much about it. I enjoy leading people, mentoring people, and just making my community a better place. Recently, I was lucky enough to be offered an internship position with BMW over the summer. I'm working with e-mobility program which is supposed to be working with their electric vehicles. However, 10 years from now, I don't want to have the title engineer. I want to shift into management roles. My question is,

What has been your experience as an engineer when trying to move up in the field? Do you think that an MBA is required, will I be passed up for promotions because I don't have a MBA?

I think getting MBA for engineers is waste of time and money, unless you are in management consulting (not real engineering).
