So glad I found this channel and I've been absolutely hooked on watching your videos! Stayed up for a couple hours last night and been watching a good bit today. As someone that admittedly knows absolutely zero about all that goes into shipping you do an excellent job at being really informative and also not making it overwhelming & too much for a complete novice like myself to understand.

I'll for sure be recommending this channel as often as I can and have been posting your excellent videos regarding the recent tragic event in Baltimore in every post Ive been coming across

Good to hear you guys have such a wide-ranging chat about this event. To clarify the insurance side in simple terms: H&M provides cover for just that; damage to hull and machinery.
P&I insurers provide cover for third party liabilities like pollution, damage to others' property (port infrastructure, other vessels etc) and importantly, salvage/towage costs. There is no percentage split to be be counted.
Both insurers will have/should have their own surveyors on site to protect their interests by info gathering (been there, done that myself, on both sides).
The shipowner remains responsible for the ship at all times, they don't hand over to anyone at any time but have to comply with directives from government agencies.

Suggestion for another episode:
The data from VesselFinder and Marine Traffic etc should give you complete data about the ship's heading versus its course and speed over the ground through the event. I've had to try and analyse such things in the past. It can be a real eye-opener.

Hi Sal, can I say as a lubber in the UK, who grew up messing about in boats, between you and John and Chief Mark, I've learned so much more about maritime current affairs in the last week.
We used to have a great weekly nighttime show on BBC radio world service, called Seven Seas, which did the same thing. It recognised the importance of the Merchant Marine services around the world. I'm sure you knew it.
We could hear experienced captains and seafaring representatives talk knowledgeably about the challenges of crewing the world's oceans. Gave us an appreciation that human beings risked their wellbeing, enduring tough working environments, poor wages and sometimes even risking kidnap by pirates to keep us fed and supplied with everything.
Apparently that had to go, because - nope, I've got nothing!
On a stormy night my old man would always look out the window and say "You think this is bad, think of those at sea..."

You need to understand that the winds that day were wild. I've lived in the Arava desert (near Eilat, Israel) for 30 years and I don't remember a sandstorm like that. It was election day here in Israel and I had to drive 100 km to staff a polling station and I couldn't see more than a dozen meters in front of me the whole way. The sail area of that ship is immense.

I read that Ever Given had another accident in 2019 on the Elbe when it crashed into a small ferry in Germany. A criminal investigation into the incident found Ever Given's captain was not at fault and blamed high winds for the collision. Wouldn´t that mean that these ULCS should be accompanied by a tug all the time when they pass the Suez Canal? Or the Elbe?
