Paris Olympics 2024: USA's Noah Lyles Wins Men's 100m Olympic Gold In Photo Finish | Men's 100m

Noah Lyles ended USA's 20-year wait to win the 100m gold in a dramatic photo finish. This was the closest Olympic 100m finish in modern Olympic history as just five thousandths of a second separated Lyles from Jamaica's Kishane Thompson. Both athletes were given the rounded-up time of 9.79 sec with Lyles finishing at .784 compared to Thompson's .789. A 'slit-video' system had to be used to precisely determine the winner. Suspense remained for over a minute as the cameras calculated the final timings. The photo finish image appears to show Thompson's leg ahead of the finish line further than Lyles, but the torso of an athlete has to cross the finish line for an official registration of timing. Hence, Kishane Thompson missed out on Olympic gold by the thinnest of margins. Noah Lyles is the first American to win a 100m Olympic gold since Justin Gatlin at 2004 Athens.

The IAAF (International Association of Athletics Federations), now known as World Athletics, has specific rules for breaking ties in medal allocation. According to the World Athletics Competition Rules 2022-2023, Section 4, Rule 26.10:

"In the event of a tie in any competition, the following procedures shall be used to break the tie:

a) For all competitions, except for the high jump and pole vault, the tie shall be broken by rounding the times or distances to the nearest hundredth of a second or centimeter, as appropriate.

b) If the tie still exists after applying the procedure in (a), the athletes shall be awarded the same place and the next place shall be left vacant.

c) In the high jump and pole vault, the tie shall be broken by the athlete who has cleared the fewest number of heights. If the tie still exists, the athletes shall be awarded the same place and the next place shall be left vacant."

So, in summary, World Athletics rules state that:

- Times or distances are rounded to the nearest hundredth of a second or centimeter to break ties.
- If the tie persists, athletes are awarded the same place, and the next place is left vacant.
